TOTAL GENERATION
In 2014

• Effective generation capacity- 54.4 GW

• Estimated generation- 258 billion kWh

• 25% increase in a decade

PERCENTAGE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
As of 2014

• 16.6% from hydroelectricity

• 3.3% from sources other than hydro

HISTORY OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
• In 1992, Private participation in generation market was allowed

• On November 28, 2008, a law addressing renewable energy was published

• In 2013, Geothermic law, Hydroelectric law etc were published

• On December 24, 2015 Energy Transition Law was published, strengthening integration of renewable into
Generation mix

RENEWABLE ENERGY POLICY
• LTE focuses on having 35% of RE by 2024

• Cost of power generation by Wind Energy expected to decrease in near future (currently approximately USD 75
MW/hr)

• Goal to reach Wind current capacity to 150 GW by 2040

• PV capacity expected to be more than 1300 MW by 2018

• To minimize the lackings of transmission facility in areas with highly potential RE sources.
TARIFF
Average tariffs for different sectors as of 2008

• Residential- USD .106/kWh

• Commercial- USD .255/kWh

• Services- USD .172/kWh

• Agriculture- USD .051/kWh

• Medium industry- USD .153/kWh

• Large industry- USD .118/kWh

RISK FACTOR
• Rules for the whole sale electricity market not finalized yet

• Structural issues

• Slow and bureaucratic process for obtaining interconnection agreements

• Rampant corruption

• Violence in some area, specially in border regions

• Complex property rules and deficient public land records

• Local oppositions
CONCLUSION
• Great potential for renewable energy sources

• Building partnership with developers and advisors with practical experience in Mexico can help the investors to
minimize the risks

• The rules and regulations has to be published and strictly maintained
