safety procedures
There are laws that address the need for a safe workplace for the
workers:
1. Republic act 8749 – the Philippine air act of 1999:
Focuses primarily on pollution prevention rather than on control
by encouraging cooperation and self regulation among citizens
and industries.
2. Regulations of the national building code of the Philippines –
aims to safeguard life, health, property, and public welfare, and to
provide minimum standards and requirement that will regulate
and control the location of buildings and site.
3. National electric code - minimum set of standards
regarding the installation of all electrical equipment to
protect persons and properties.
4. Republic act 9514 – fire code of the Philippines of 2008 –
ensures public safety by promoting economic development
through the prevention and suppression of all kinds of
destructive fires.
Hazards:
◦ Are things or situation that pose danger or threat to human and non
human resources including the environment, psychological dimension,
and system.

Here are common workplace hazards:


1. Human conditions. These refers to stress, violence, fatigue,
carelessness, negligence, poor personal hygiene, and inability to use
proper tools and equipment in the workplace.
2. Physical hazards. These includes heat, noise, cold, vibration,
lighting, ventilation, fire, machines and the presence of foreign
objects in the workplace that hinder workflow or cause accidents.
3. Chemical hazards. Refers to the presence of unwanted or
the improper use of chemicals such as pesticides, laundry
detergents, kitchen and toilet cleaners, insecticides, and
repellents that can cause injuries to human, property and
environment.
4. Biological hazards. These are infections caused by
bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi.
5. Radiation hazards. Type of hazard occurs when there is
contact with radio waves or microwaves, ultraviolet,
infrared lights, and x-rays.
Common injuries and accidents in the workplace:
1. Lack of proper protection and safety practices in handling
equipment or tools.
2. Slips, falls, and trips
3. Poor housekeeping
4. Poor lighting facility and ventilation
5. Liquid spills
6. Physical Obstructions
7. Poor ergonomics.
Ergonomics is the interaction of the human body with the
equipment needed for a task.
8. Lack of instructions, training, and supervision
9. Inappropriate behavior or medical conditions
10. Negligence
Personal protection equipment (PPE) – they are equipment
designed to protect a person’s body from injury brought about
physical, biological, chemical, radiological, or personal
conditions or hazards.

Eye protection – Goggles, visors and glasses are used to protect


the eyes from chemical, physical or radiological hazard.

Hearing Protection – included here are objects designed to


cover a person’s ears for protection.
Respiratory protection –this composed of respirators, face
mask, and cartridge filters that maybe worn to purify or filter
contaminated air.

Hand protections – to protect hands from spilled chemicals,


vapors, or contaminants, hand gloves and barrier cream are
available.

Foot protection – safety boots or shoes are designed to protect


feet from shocks, chemical spills and dangerous objects.
Skin or body protection – hats, apron, hand gloves, sunscreen
and long sleeved clothes are ideal items for protection against
physical, chemical biological hazards.

Head protection – hard hats, hairnets, or caps are important


coverings for the head.
