Pronunciation is defined as the way of how a language is spoken . One of Indonesian
difficulties in learning English speaking is how to pronounce English sounds correctly.
The different pronunciations or different sounds will cause different meanings.

1. Silent t in words ending with -st, -nt a
nd -ct, and silent k in words ending
with –nk.

Examples:
"Effect" is pronounced /ɪ'fɛk/. (should be
pronounced /'ɪ'fɛkt/).
"Expect" is pronounced /ɛk'spɛk/. (should
be pronounced /ɪk'spɛkt/).

2. Wrong pronunciation of words ending
in –sk.

Examples:
"Ask" is pronounced /'æks/ or /'æs/. (should
be pronounced /'æsk/).
"Disk" is pronounced /'dɪks/ or /'dɪs/. (shoul

3. Sounds of th (/θ/ and /ð/).

Indonesians are not accustomed to pron
ouncing /v/. They often use /f/ instead of
/v/.

unced /'lɪv/).

When gh should be silent, it is pronounc

Indonesians tend to use strong forms wh
en they are not normally used.

Examples:
Can you swim?
"Can" here is pronounced /'kæn/ (strong
form). (should be pronounced /kən/ (wea
k form))
CONCLUSION
From the data, it was found that the errors occurred potentially because of the
influence of the first language. The first possibility is the difference phonological
system between Bahasa Indonesia as the first language and the English as the se
cond language. The second cause of the error is the English knowledge of the Indo
nesian or the speaker. It is because the limited knowledge of vocabulary.
