SYNTHETIC

DIVISION
Objectives:

At the end of the meeting, the students will be able

to:
1. Perform division of polynomials using synthetic
division
MOTIVATION

We also have different stages
or steps that we need to follow
in order for us to learn our
lesson for today.

SYNTHETIC
DIVISION
SYNTHETIC DIVISION

is a numerical method used for

dividing a polynomial by a
binomial of the form x − 𝑐.
SYNTHETIC DIVISION (STEPS)
To divide a polynomial by
x−c: Example:
1. Arrange the polynomial
2𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 −x+4
in descending powers;
insert a 0 coefficient for Divided by
any missing term 𝑥−3
SYNTHETIC DIVISION (STEPS)
To divide a polynomial by
x−c:
2. Write c for the divisor, 3 2 -3 -1 4
which is also the subtrahend
in (x-c). To its right, write the
coefficients of the dividend.
SYNTHETIC DIVISION (STEPS)

To divide a polynomial by
x−c: 3 2 -3 -1 4
3. Write the leading
coefficient of the dividend on (Bring down 2)
the bottom row. 2
SYNTHETIC DIVISION (STEPS)
To divide a polynomial by
x−c:
4. Multiply the divisor c (in 3 2 -3 -1 4
this case, 3) by the value just
written on the bottom row. (2*3) 6
Write the product in the next 2
column in the second row.
SYNTHETIC DIVISION (STEPS)

To divide a polynomial by
x−c: 3 2 -3 -1 4
5. Add the values in this new
column, writing the sum in 6 (Add -3&6)
the bottom row. 2 3
SYNTHETIC DIVISION (STEPS)

To divide a polynomial by
x−c: 3 2 -3 -1 4
6. Repeat this series of
multiplications and addition 6 9
until all columns are filled in. 2 3 8
SYNTHETIC DIVISION (STEPS)

3 2 -3 -1 4
