Sir Emms
• Describe the image formed by mirrors;
• Distinguish between converging and
diverging mirrors; and
• Identify ways in which the properties of
mirrors determine their use in daily life.
*Materials: Spoons, shiny metal ones and pen.
*Procedures:
1. Stand in a well lit room or outside. Hold the
spoon by the handle just like you would when
you are eating, but flip it over so that the back
of the spoon is facing your pen. Look at it at
the curved end, what does it look like?
2. Now turn the spoon so that the back of the spoon
is still facing the pen but the curved part is
pointing at the ceiling or sky. Have another
look at it.
3. Next, turn the spoon over and look at your pen in
the front of the curved part where the food
normally goes. What do you see?
1. What other surfaces would have the same effect
on light rays?
2. What sort of things could this be useful for?
3. Have you seen this effect before? Where?
4. What do you think might happen if the spoon
wasn’t shiny?
• Plane mirrors produce images that are similar to
the objects they reflect.
• The images appear to be as far behind the mirror
as the object does.
• Have you noticed the word “AMBULANCE” in an
am-bulance car?
• Plane mirrors have a lateral reversal effect: the
right side of the object appears as the left side of
the
*Reflection is the bouncing
off of light rays when it hits a
surface like a plane mirror.
*Reflection involves a
change in direction of the light
ray.
*According to the law of re-
flection, the angle of incidence
(θi) equals the angle of reflection
(θr).
2 TYPES OF REFLECTION
• A Curved Mirror is a
reflecting surface in which
its surface is a section of
sphere.
• Two kinds of Curved
Mirrors:
-CONCAVE
-CONVEX
A ray diagram is a diagram that traces the
path
that light takes in order for a person to view a point
on the image of an object.
On the diagram, rays (lines with arrows) are
drawn for the incident ray and the reflected ray.
