DATABASE
MANAGEMENT
SYSTEM( DBMS )
ROMMEL C. DESUYO, LPT.
Personal Computer -8
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the topic,learners are expected to;

A. Define precisely what database is.

B. Appreciate computerized
database management system.
C. Design your own manual
database.
WHAT IS A DATABASE?
- Is a collection of information that is
related to a particular subject or a
purpose.

Some works that has database ; financial

transactions in a bank, tracking or
students records at school , revenue
report in a business firm or tracking of
data in scientific organization.
WHAT IS DATABASE
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
-Is a collection of computer programs
that enables users to create and manage
database.
-It manages all request for database
action from the users, such as updates
and queries.
HOW DOES DBMS AFFECT ME/YOU?

 When the librarian use computer to assess

information about the time you borrow the
book.
 When a video shop tells you that the
computer does not allow you to borrow
another CD because based on the computer
records you still have 3 CDs no yet returned.
 This can be seen in (POS) Point-of-Sales system
whenever you pay your items in grocery or
department store checkout counter.
Classification of Databases
1. Traditional or Manual Database-do not use computer in keeping
records of information.
Example ; Slum book , telephone directory/cellphone contact , list
of items and their price to buy in a store, class record of a teacher
2. Computerized database-Uses computer to keep records of
information.
Example; database in a bank, POS in a grocery store, database in
a company,

2 Kinds of Computerized Database

1. Flat-file Database-is a list of information that is not related to any
other lists or tables.
Example: Single list of students’ names , their levels and
sections in an Excel worksheet.
2. Relational Database-is the type that stores information and
conducts searches by using data in related tables.
Example:
A list of two or more tables related with each other.
BASIC PARTS OF DATABASE
ENVIRONMENT
Fields

Recor
ds
Column are called Fields-it is a
category of information.

ROWS IN A TABLE ARE CALLED RECORDS-IT IS A

SET OF FIELDS FOR A SPECIFIC ITEM.

Information in a database is usually

organized and stored in a table.
ADVANTAGE OF DBMS

Speed-it can find a specific record or information

from among thousands or even million entries within
a seconds.
COMPACT- It can store in a single floppy disK.
FLEXIBLE- Its ability to examine information from a
number of ways,so you could search for people
living in the same city or with persons with the same
last names.
ASSESSMENT 1
DIRECTION: IDENTIFY THE FOLLOWING
STATEMENT.
1.It is more faster, flexible and compact.
2.It stores information in a single floppy or usb devices.
3.It refers to a row in a table of database.
4.A list of information that is not necessarily related
to any other list or tables.
5.A collection of information that is related to a
particular subject or purpose.
ASSESSMENT 1
DIRECTION: IDENTIFY THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT.

6.It examine information from a number of ways.

7.It reduces the probability of inconsistent data.
8.It the set of fields for a specific item.
9.A database that stores information and conducts
searches by using data in related tables.
10.It manages all request for database action from
the user, such as updates and queries.
ASSESSMENT 2
DIRECTION: Read, analyse and give what is asked in
the statements.
1.Write down at least 2 examples of a manual database.5 points
each

2.What motivates to study the Database Management System?10

Points

3.What are the advantages of a computerized database over a

manual database?Give at least 3 examples in each database,5
points each example

4.Give instances when we encounter DBMS.Provide at least 3,5 points

each

5.Classify the kinds of database and differentiate each,5 points each.

ACTIVITY /ASSIGNMENT 1
CREATING A MANUAL DATABASE

NAME,MOBILE NUMBER, HOME ADDRESS,YEAR LEVEL AND
SECTION. Keep this database since it will be used in your
activities in the next chapters. 100 points given once
completed and checked by your teacher.
