Factors Affecting Solubility of

Solid Solute
1. The effect of Stirring :
What is Stirring ?
• Stirring – A continued rotary motion with an implement or stirrer to the parts
of a fluid or semifluid in order to make the composition homogeneous or
uniform mixture.
2. The Effect of Particle Size
Definition of Terms
• Mixtures- A physical combination of two or more substances on which the identities are
retained and are mixed in the form of solution, suspension, and colloids.
• Solutions- are homogeneous mixtures that has one phase and uniform appearance.
• Solute- The component of a solution that is in lesser quantity. The substance being dissolved.
• Solvent- The component of a solution that is in greater amount. The dissolving substance of a
solution.
• Solubility- the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in a certain amount of solvent
at a certain temperature.
The Effects of Stirring
and Particle Size in
Solubility of Solid Solute
ACTIVITY III
I - OBJECTIVES

1.Investigate the effect of stirring in mixing the solid in

water ; and
2.Explain how the size of the solid being dissolved affects
solubility
II- MATERIALS

• Milo powder
• Crystal salt
• Iodized salt
• Beakers water
• spoon
III- PROCEDURE
Part I. Effect of Stirring

1. Label the beakers 1,2,3,4.

2. Put 100 ml water in beaker 1 and beaker 2.
3. Add 1 tablespoon Milo powder in beaker 1 and stir the mixture. Observe.
4. Add 1 tablespoon Milo powder in beaker 2. This time do not stir the
mixture. Observe what happen. Differentiate the mixtures formed in beaker
1 and 2.
Part II. Effect of Particle Size:

1. Put 100 ml water in beaker 3 and 4.

2. Add 1 tablespoon of salt crystals in beaker 3. Observe.
3. Into beaker 4, add 1 tablespoon of iodized salt. Observe. Differentiate
the mixture formed in beaker 3 and beaker 4.
IV- DATA and Observations:
A. EFFECT OF STIRRING:
MIXTURE OBSERVATION
BEAKER I Milo in Water ( stirred ) It dissolved very fast
BEAKER II Milo in Water ( not stirred ) It dissolved slowly
B. EFFECT OF PARTICLE SIZE :

BEAKER 3 Crystal salt in water It dissolved slowly

BEAKER 4 Iodized salt in water It dissolved fast
QUESTIONS :
1. How stirring affects solubility of solid solute ( Milo powder) ?
• Stirring the mixture will let the water particles come in contact faster with the corners
and edges of Milo powder particles. Therefore, Milo powder dissolves faster.

2. How particle size affects solubility of solid solute ( Crystal and Iodized salts ) ?
• Iodized Salt dissolves faster than the crystal salt since it has a bigger surface area.
• Smaller particles size easily dissolves in water than bigger particles.
EVALUATION:
I- Based on your observation, answer the following in ¼ sheet of paper:
1. Which dissolved faster, stirred Milo or unstirred Milo ?
2. Which one is solute, salt or water ?
3. Which dissolved faster, iodized salt ( with smaller particles ) or crystal salt ( with bigger
particles ) ?
4. Which one is solvent, salt or water ?
5. How many mL of water did you put in your glass or beaker ?
