Context and Rationale
Should contain the following:

• The nature, extent, and salience of the identified problem or issue are comprehensively
discussed
• Different aspects of the action research setting are elaborated showing in depth and
critical analysis of the situation. Write observation with local scenario. Support that the
phenomenon is true.
• Explains why the research study is formulated

• End the discussion by stating that the phenomenon inspires you/ motivates you/ encourages
you to focus on it in a target environment.

Context and Rationale
It cannot be denied that problem solving is a significant part of Mathematics
teaching. Mathematics, in general, is an essential subject because of its practical
role to a person and the society as a whole. However, before a student can
successfully solve a problem, he has to possess good reading comprehension,
as well as analytic and computational skills.
Problem solving in mathematics and reading comprehension go hand in
hand. Solving Math problems entails the students to apply two skills at the same
time: reading and computing (Ferro, 2016).
The First Grading Mean Percentage Score in
Mathematics Grade 9 Section Daisy in Rizal Elementary
School, revealed that out of 50 students, 35 or 70 % have
poor performance; 9 or 18 %, “good’; 6 or 12 %, “very
good”; and no one obtained “Outstanding” performance.
This implies that majority of student-respondents have
difficulty in mathematics problem solving.
Analysis
True of the
phenomenon Situation
The students’ performance in the First Grading
Mathematics is quite alarming. A remedial class was
conducted to help struggling learners. But still majority
have struggles because they have poor understanding
on performing mathematical operations. With this
scenario, an action research will be conducted to
address difficulties encountered by students in
Mathematics.

This inspires/motivates/encourages
the researcher to conduct the study
This motivates the researcher to conduct
the study to determine students’ performance in
math problem-solving and to implement an
intervention strategies that will address the
cause of the problem.

Title:
Designing a Self-made Learning Material to Increase Performance of Grade 6
Pupils in Mathematics National Achievement Test (NAT)

This intervention is helpful to pupils who are poor in learning Mathematics.

Specifically, problem solving and understanding worded problem are the least learned
competencies. In this view, this study will propose a Self-made Learning Material as
support to students’ with poor learning performance in the standard competencies. This
material covers differentiated learning activities that will help grade 6 pupils success in
Mathematics National Achievement Test (NAT).
The part I is composed of language comprehension and
vocabulary activities related to mathematics. Part II covers differentiated
activities related to problem solving, and Part III focuses on analyzing
worded problems.

According to Jinbel (2018), Mathematics is a subject that affects

all human life. It is used throughout our daily lives. One of the hardest
parts of learning Mathematics is problem solving. A teacher-made
learning activities are essential in enhancing students’ performance.

• Details are provided about the target participants

(ex: number, characteristics, sampling procedure, if
any and/ or other sources of data and information

• Clear rationale for their inclusion in the study is

given
Details about the
target participants
Example:

This study includes 300 grade 6 pupils with poor

performance in Mathematics. Five schools of Zamboanga
del Sur Division located in the high land areas will be
included in the study. They will be chosen through simple
random sampling. These pupils are the target respondents
because they need remediation to bring them up to speed
or help them get better. Clear rationale for their
inclusion in the study
b. Data gathering Methods

This explains why the selected data gathering

method(s) is suited to the purpose of the action
research. Data gathering method(s) is aligned with
the research questions. Research instruments, if
any are appropriate for obtaining the desired kind of
data/information.
Qualitative –When the researcher utilizes interview, Focus
Group Discussion, Observation, Documents, and other
narrative analysis.

Quantitative – When the researcher uses survey

questionnaire, tests and other data that involves number.
This includes experimental studies

Mixed Method – When the researcher used both Qualitative

and quantitative
The method is Qualitative –When it utilizes interview, Focus Group Discussion, Observation, Documents, and
other narrative analysis.

The method is Quantitative – When it utilizes survey questionnaire, tests and other data that involves unmber

Example:
This study focuses on using mixed methods. The Quantitative method
through descriptive survey will be used in assessing students’ performance in problem
solving and worded problems before and after the implementation of self-made learning
materials. Qualitative method will be used in determining the effectiveness of the self-
made learning materials through observation, in-depth interview and Focused Group
Discussion (FGD). The questionnaire-checklist will be the main instrument of the study.

Plans for Dissemination and Utilization

Dissemination is the transfer of research-based knowledge to the

ones that can best make use of it. The aims of dissemination are:
awareness; understanding and action Typically, research is not fully
complete until the findings have been made widely available.

Utilization is the process of synthesizing, disseminating, and using

research-generated knowledge to make an impact on or change in the
existing practice. The purpose of research utilization is to address the
problems by using research findings in practice.
