Title
The first thing that determines the success of your
research is your research title. A good research title should
have the following qualities.
 Indicate accurately the subject and scope of the study.
 Avoid using abbreviations.
 Use words that create a positive impression and stimulate
reader interest.
 Use current nomenclature from the field of study.
 May reveal how the paper will be organized.
 Is limited to 10 to 15 substantive words.
 Do not include "study of," "analysis of" or similar
constructions.
 Titles are usually in the form of a phrase,
 Use correct grammar and capitalization with all first words
and last words capitalized, including the first word of a
subtitle. All nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and
adverbs that appear between the first and last words of the
title are also capitalized.
Situation
 It refers to the descriptive background of the
problem.
 It describes the nature of the problem.
Rationale of the Study
 The term rationale defined as a justification for doing
something. The value of developing a rationale is that
it provides a framework for the research.
The Problem
 Specifies the core of the difficulty or crisis. This is the
main problem. In this portion the general problem is
broken down into specific sub-problems from which
the former could be attributed.
General Problem
The problem in TLE is on the
enhancement of students’
performance.
Specific problems
1. Low mastery learning in TLE
because of lack of meaningful
strategy to teach the subject.
2. Low retention rate as an offshoot
of the lack of meaningful
experiences due to the traditional
approach in teaching the subject
3. Lack of concrete
conceptualization of lessons
brought about by the uninteresting
mode of instruction

4. Inadequate and inappropriate

teaching aids.
Generation of Alternative Solution
This portion brings about the possible
approaches to solve the problem. It must
give good reasons for the use of such
alternative actions.
ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES
can be drawn from the list of innovative methodologies
that DepED endorses for use in the Elementary and
High School levels. For instance, in the teaching of
TLE, a teacher may explore the effectiveness of any or
combination of the following strategies: predict-
observe-explain approach, process approach, practical
work approach, process approach or cooperative
learning.
The Plan of Action
is divided into sub-components, namely:
the objectives, time frame, target
participants, and activities to be
undertaken
The objectives

are the goals towards which all the

effects are directed. Under the
DepED format, these are the target
set by the research that should be
achieved at the end of the research.
The Time Frame

specifies the period or duration

of the study, from the beginning
of the up to the end. (3 to
months conduct)
Target Participants
Refers to the subject of your study.
The students are the subjects for
which the research is undertaken.

CONCEPTUALIZING AN ACTION
RESEARCH
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

The first step to conceptualize an action research is to

identify a problem.
The problem should be within one’s control: a classroom
or a school problem.
The problem should be a
BOTHERING OR A
PESTERING PROBLEM that
a teacher naturally observes
within day to day school
activities.
PROBLEMS SHOULD BE
FOCUSED ON SCHOOL ISSUE,
PROBLEM OR AREA OF
COLLECTIVE INTEREST.
WHAT CAN I INVESTIGATE
THROUGH ACTION RESEARCH?
ACTION RESEARCH CAN BE USED TO
INVESTIGATE PRACTICAL, EVERYDAY ISSUES,
EVERYDAY PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED BY
TEACHERS.

ALL YOU NEED IS A GENERAL IDEA THAT

SOMETHING MIGHT BE IMPROVED.
Examples of Problems in School
1. Students got low scores in a
problem test where only 5 out of
35 students or 14% could solve
five or more of the problems in
the test.
Prob: How can students’ ability to
solve word problems be improved.
2. After evaluating the compositions of
her students a non-language teacher
found out that they are unable to spell
correctly, punctuate conventionally,
compose grammatically correct
sentences and develop unified
paragraphs.
Prob: The predicament is how students
could be taught to write passable
sentences.
3.A classroom teacher in the secondary
grade found that in her class there are
slow learners who have difficulties in
adjusting to the curriculum because of
the slight inferior learning abilities of
students. This situation is carried over
to students’ performance in recitations
and tests.
Prob: How to handle the slow learners to
develop their inherent and natural
abilities.
4. Whenever a high school
teacher gave assignment in TLE,
she most often found that only
one-fourth of the students
effectively accomplished them.
Prob: To find out why students
could not accomplish their
assignments well.
Brainstorming
 Think of a topic for action research.
 Propose a title.
Thank you.
