available legal remedies to seek justice for his
family and the farmers in Calamba.

✣ Teatro Apollo – where the expatriates and Rizal watched
a play and also where he lost his gold watch chain with a
locket containing the picture of Leonor Rivera.
✣ Rizal received a letter from Leonor Rivera in 1890 telling
him that she will be married to Charles Henry Kipping,
an Englishman and engineer and the man whom her
mother chose to be her husband.

Leonor was not the woman for him.

⨳ Rizal was the undisputed leader of the filipino
expatriates. He believed to earn the respect of
the spaniards was to demonstrate a high sense
of morality and dignity, but Rizal’s idealism
wasn’t accepted by his fellow expatriates. This
caused them to shy away from Rizal and
questioning his leadership. This resulted in
some of the expatriates to shift their loyalty to
Del Pilar.

⨳ Del Pilar was Rizal’s rival for leadership. Del
Pilar was a modern politician. Rizal and Del
Pilar’s rift worsened when they argued about
how to run the La Solidaridad. In order to
prevent the two from splitting up, they held a
meeting to elect someone who was to handle the
affairs of the Filipino community. Due to the
elections, the expatriates were divided into two.
The Rizalistas and the Pilaristas.

Del Pilar told Mariano Ponce to convince
the Pilaristas to vote for Rizal, but he did
not accept the position because he felt
that it was an insult and that Del Pilar

H. Del Pilar, which caused Rizal to leave the city.
✣ This begins the question of who was the better
politician. For Guerrero, Del Pilar was the better
politician for he possessed all the qualities to succeed in
politics.
✣ Rizal and Del Pilar’s rift intensified and the mews
reached manila and caused the people who support the
propaganda to tell Juan Zulueta to reconcile the two but
Rizal still withdrew his position and left Madrid.
