WHAT IS
PROSTITUTION?
What drives a prostitution?
PROSTITUTION
“The world's oldest profession.“

 Prostitution has been practiced

throughout ancient and modern culture.

 And despite consistent attempts at regulation,

it continues nearly unchanged.
PROSTITUTION
Prostitution is a gendered, sexualized, and
racialized labor system, one that typically
involves the exchange of sexual services for
money, goods, or other benefits. Sex work
encompasses different types of intimate
arrangements that blur the boundaries
between erotic, emotional, and economic
labor.
Sacred prostitution, temple prostitution, cult prostitution, and religious
prostitution are general terms for a sexual rite consisting of sexual
intercourse or other sexual activity performed in the context of religious
worship, perhaps as a form of fertility rite or divine marriage (hieros
gamos). Some scholars prefer the terms "sacred sex" or "sacred sexual
rites" to "sacred prostitution" in cases where payment for services was
not involved.

workers in the country, 3000 of whom are in Baguio, one of the
country’s top tourist draws.
– TEX, Baguio-based rights advocate and a member of the
Philippine Sex Workers Collective (PSWC) said as the number
of sex workers (prostitutes) grows, so does the number of cases
of abuse and violence against them.
– Among others, Filipino sex workers face health issues, made
worse by fear of being denied access to health services.
– According to the study released by the Philippine Population
Institution (PPI) there were around 400,000 cases of abortion in
the Philippines in 2003.

“The reason why so much abuse happens is that
they (prostitutes/sex workers) are not recognized
by law and the government…,” TEX said.

“…as long as poverty is there, you expect more

people to engage in prostitution.”
TEX said.
