ELECTRONICS

Electron charge is used for the

manipulation, storage and transfer of
information.

Spin of the electron is not considered.

SPINTRONICS
Spintronics is an
emerging
technology.
Spintronics depends
on spin of electron
and associated
magnetic field.
SPINTRONICS
This type of spin creates a tiny magnetic field
The possible spin states naturally represents
‘0’ or ‘1’ called qubits.
NEED OF SPINTRONICS
Failure of Moore’s law:
No. of transistors on a silicon chip
will roughly double every 18 months,
so density increases.
Further decrease in size of
components leads to circuit
improper working.
NEED OF SPINTRONICS

Spintronics devices offers the possibility of

1. High speed
2. Reduction of power consumption
3. Increasing the capability
EVOLUTION
CURRENT IN METALLIC CONDUCTOR:

 Scattering takes place in equal amount.

EVOLUTION
CURRENT IN A FERROMAGNETIC CONDUCTOR:

 Scattering depends on spin of electron.

 Spin down: Strong scattering,
Spin up: Weak scattering.
EVOLUTION
SPIN-DEPENDENT SCATTERING:

 Scattering of electrons is strong.

 High resistance.
EVOLUTION
SPIN-DEPENDENT SCATTERING:

 Only few electrons are strongly scattered.

 More current flow.
 Low resistance.
BASIC PRINCIPLE
Directional and coherent
motion of electron spin
circulates a spin current.
Spin current carry
information.
Spin current control
quantum spin in an
spintronic device.
WORKING
All spintronics devices act according to the
simple scheme:

 Information is stored into spins as a

particular spin orientation (up or down)
 The spin present mobile electrons, carry the
information .
ELECTRONICS V/S SPINTRONICS
ELECTRONICS SPINTRONICS
 Power failure problem.  No power failure problem.
 “Boot up” waiting problem.  No “Boot up” waiting
problem.
 More power consumption.  Less power consumption.
 Less compact.  More compact.
 Normal speed.  Faster transfer.
 Cheaper.  Costlier
EFFECTS OF SPINTRONICS
The two important effects of Spintronics are:

1. GMR
2. TMR
GMR
GMR stands for Giant
Magneto Resistance.

In 1988, Albert Fert’s group

discovered GMR Effect.

Large change in electron

resistance is called Magneto
resistance.
TMR
TRM stands for Tunnel
Magneto Resistance.

If the insulating material is

thin enough , electrons can
tunnel from one Ferro
magnet to another.
ADVANTAGES
Low power consumption.
Less power dissipation.
Spintronic memory is non-volatile.
Takes up lesser space on chip i.e., more
compatible.
Spin manipulation is faster.
APPLICATIONS
Spintronic devices are used in the field of
mass-storage devices

It is also used in the medical field to detect

cancer.

Spintronics technology in general holds

promises for digital electronics.
CONCLUSION
As said in the starting itself it is a new era in
electronics, it can be concluded from its
advantages also.

By using all electronic and magnetic

properties of charge this field open door for
many new invention and possibilities in
future.
