Petrochemical product

analysis
MTBE (Methyl tertiary butyl ether)
MTBE (Methyl tertiary butyl ether) is a volatile, low viscosity clear liquid at room temperature with an ether odour.
 CAS number 1634-04-4
 Chemical formula (CH3)3COCH3
Product application

Application sector Nature of application

Blending component for increasing the octane number of gasoline
Gasoline
and to raise the oxygen content
To produce high purity isobutylene through cracking
Isobutylene
(back crack)
Methyl methacrylate Chemical raw material

High purity methyl tertiary butyl ether (HP MTBE):

HP MTBE is used as process solvent. It has the competitive advantage due to it having strong solvating power (solvent).

High purity MTBE has applications in pharmaceutical industry and in organic metallic compounds

.
ETBE (Ethylene tertiary butyl ether)
Product analysis
Appearance Colourless liquid
Molecular formula C6H14O

Product application
 ETBE is used as octane booster in gasoline
 ETBE has many properties which make it an excellent gasoline component
for cleaner and sustainable fuels.
 Because of the oxygen in the molecule, when used as part of the gasoline
formulation, ETBE leads to reduction in emission of exhaust pollutants
(such as volatile organic compounds and particulates), reducing these
pollutants and improving the air quality.
Polyisobutylene
Polyisobutylene is a linear polymer of isobutylene of different molecular weights
CAS number 9003-27-4; 9003-29-6 (oligomers)
Alternate names * Polyisobutene
* PIB
Appearance Clear, colourless liquid
Chemical formula (C4H8)n

Forms of polyisobutylene

Polyisobutylene can be broadly classified into two types namely, conventional

isobutylene (PIB) and highly reactive isobutylene (HRPIB).

Polyisobutylene is further classified as low molecular weight PIB, medium molecular

weight PIB and high molecular weight PIB based on molecular weight.

Average molecular weight

Form Average Molecular Weight
(Dalton)
Low molecular weight
300 to ~5,000 300 to 600
polyisobutylene (LMW PIB)
Medium molecular weight
~5,000 to 150,000 900 to 1300
polyisobutylene (MMW PIB)
High molecular weight
~500,000 to ~ 1,200,000 2500 to 4200
polyisobutylene (HMW PIB)
Highly reactive polyisobutylene (HR PIB)

The molecular weights of highly reactive PIB are comparatively low, i.e., in the range of 1,000
Dalton.
The terms highly reactive (HR-PIB) and high vinylidene (HV-PIB) are synonymous.

Nature of application
sector
 Polyisobutylene is mainly used to produce ashless dispersants for lube oil and detergents for
gasoline and fuel oil.
Two-stroke oil  Conventional PIB with molecular weight of approximately +/- 940 g/mol are used in two-
and four-stroke stroke oil to clean exhaust gasses.
oil  The PIB acts as an attractant of dirt, which arises during the process of burning petrol and oil
in an engine. By adding PIB to the two-stroke oil, the emergence of smoke will decrease. PIB
is also used in four-stroke oil because of its good shear.
Miscellaneous application sector include the following
 compositions
► Rubber and plastic LMWPIB are used►asStretch/Silage/Cling
dielectric oils, functional fluids for cable fills and special lubricants
Wrap and adhesives
Lubricants
► Medical and cosmetics
 Also used in this industry for foiling, stamping, cutting and pressing.
Caulks and
 MMWPIB are components or precursors of caulks, sealants and gasoline additives
sealants
 Higher-molecular-weight polybutenes (HMWPIB) are used as modifiers in various adhesives,
Adhesives
especially hot-melt and pressure-sensitive products
 Highly reactive polyisobutene (HR-PIB) is used as a fuel additive. It is primarily used as a
Fuel additive dispersant in the form of polyisobutylamine, polyisobutylene, succinimide, polyisobutylene
and phenylamine.
Polyisobutylene
Highly reactive polyisobutylene (HR-PIB)

 HR-PIB is an important intermediate additive for the manufacturing of high performance fuel and lubricants, such as fuel
detergents or dispersants for engine oils. PIB-HR is also used as an additive for sludge prevention in lubricants. It offers a cleaner
decomposition and no residue in engines, which results in a more fuel efficient engine design.

 When added to fuel, the properties of this product will help reduce the emission of hydrocarbons and particles. It will also be
added in small amounts to lubrication oils to decrease the oil mist, which will result in a better final product performance
