Objectives:
LO 2. Configure Computer
Systems and Networks

◦At the end of the lesson, the student

should be able to:
◦Identify the function of IP Address
◦Give the importance of IP Address.
◦Identify IP Address Classes
IP Address An Internet
Protocol Address (IP address)
◦is a numerical label assigned to each
device (e.g., computer, printer)
participating in a computer network
that uses the Internet Protocol for
communication.
◦An IP address serves two principal
functions: host or network interface
identification location addressing.
IP Addresses
 An IP address is an address used to
uniquely identify a device on an IP

UNIQUE
network.
IP Addresses
 The address is made up of 32 binary bits which can
be divisible into a network portion and host portion with
the help of a subnet mask.

 32 binary bits are broken into four octets (1

octet = 8 bits)
 Dotted decimal format (for example,
192.168.0.1)
IP CLASSES
IP Classes Purpose
◦Class A -Used for large networks, implemented
by large companies and some countries

◦Class B- Used for medium-sized networks,

implemented by universities

◦Class C -Used for small networks,

implemented by ISPs for customer subscriptions

◦Class D- Used for special use for multicasting

◦ Class E- Used for experimental testing
IP Address Classes
◦Class A: The first octet is the network
portion. Octets 2, 3, and 4 are
for subnets/hosts
◦Class B: The first two octets are the
network portion. Octets 3 and
4 are for subnets/hosts
◦Class C: The first three octets are
the network portion. Octet 4 is
for subnets/hosts
Private Address Range
Address Class Reserved Address Space

Class A 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255

Class B 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255

Class C 192.168.0.0 -
192.168.255.255
Subnet Mask
◦Distinguishes which portion of the
address identifies the network
and which portion of the address
identifies the node.
◦Default masks:
Class A: 255.0.0.0
Class B: 255.255.0.0
Class C: 255.255.255.0
Benefits of Subnetting

1) Reduced network traffic

2) Optimized network
performance
3) Simplified management
4) Facilitated spanning of large
geographical distances
Ipconfig
◦is a command used
to find out the IP
address of a certain
network you are
connected to.
Type of IP Address

Static IP – Fixed and

never changes
Dynamic IP – temporary
and could change at any
time
Internet Protocol

IP Configuration of an Interface
Static DHCP
Static IP Address A static IP address is just
what it sounds like: it's an IP address that
doesn't change.
Static IP addresses are manually assigned
to a device,
Static IP address (also known as fixed IP
address) is simply one that doesn’t
change. Your computer decides upon the
address it wants, and it tells the router.
Activity 1: GROUP ACTIVITY
•Identify if the IP ADDRESS
1.Using adapters setting or cmd to get the IP Address.
2.Identify the IP Address Class.(A,B, C, D)
3.Identify if the IP Address is Static or Dynamic.
• Classify the following.
192.168.0.1 255.0.0.0
10.0.0.0 255.255.0.0
172.16.0.0 255.255.255.0

C. Generalization
An ________________is a logical numeric
address that is assigned to every single
C________, P_______, and R____ or any other
device that is part of a TCP/IP-based network.
The I_____________is the core component on
which the networking architecture is built; no
network exists without it. An I____ is a logical
address that is used to uniquely identify every
C_____________ in the network.
D. Valuing
a.Why do we need to know
about the IP Address?
b.Does it help to improve our
Knowledge about network
connectivity and its proper
use?
