Mandibular Second

Premolar

Presented by : Dr. Akbar Shamsi

 Resembles the mandibular first premolar from
buccal view slightly
 2 forms; three cusp type and two cusp type
 It has a single root which is more longer and
larger than the first premolar’s root

Chronology:

o Enamel completed 6-7 yrs

o Eruption 11-12 yrs
o Root completion 13-14 yrs
Buccal Aspect:

 Trapezoidal in shape
 Cusp is shorter and less pointed than the first
premolar
 Mesial inclined plane is shorter than the distal
one
 Because of short buccal cusp, the contact
areas are located cervico-occlusally
 Mesiobuccal cusp ridge and distobuccal cusp
ridge have less degree angulation
 From this view root is broader mesiodistally
Lingual Aspect:

 This surface is smooth and spheroidal in shape

 Bulbous part above the cervical portion is visible
 The surface is convex with more of it towards the
occlusal 1/3rd
 occlusal surface is seen from this aspect and small
part of the buccal portion as well
 In two cusp type:

• Lingual cusp is smaller and shorter than

buccal cusp but larger than first premolar
• Slight depression distolingually where the
lingual cusp ridge joins the distal marginal
ridge
Lingual aspect:
 Three cusp type:
• Mesiolingual cusp is longer and larger than
distolingual cusp
• The lingual developmental groove is also
seen between the two cusps
• Both the cusps are less pointed and
shorter than buccal cusp
Mesial Aspect:

 Crown and root are wider buccolingually

 Rhomboidal in shape
 Marginal ridge is at right angles to the axis of
the tooth
 More occlusal surface is seen from this aspect
and less lingual inclination
 Buccal cusp tip on line with the root axis
Distal Aspect:

 Same as mesial aspect but less of occlusal

surface may be seen
 Crowns are tipped distally to the long axis of
the tooth
 In three cusp type, distolingual cusp is shorter
than the mesiolingual cusp so both are seen
from this aspect
Occlusal Aspect:
 In two cusp type:

 occlusal aspect is more round In shape

 Mesial fossa is larger than the distal fossa

 Mesial and distal marginal ridges are seen

 Buccal and lingual triangular ridges form a
transverse ridge

 Central developmental groove extending

mesiodistally across the occlusal surface,
over the transverse ridge
Occlusal aspect:

Three cusp type:

 Square shaped from this view

 Buccal cusp is the largest
 Each cusp has well developed triangular ridges
separated by deep developmental grooves
 Mesial and distal marginal ridges are well marked
 Distal triangular fossa is smaller than the mesial one
 No central developmental groove or transverse
ridge is seen
 Central pit is Y-shaped
