BACKGROUND

Philippine Geography

• Located near the equator where tropical typhoons are common

• Within the Pacific Ring of Fire that makes it prone to earthquakes

Introduction
BACKGROUND

Braces
A structure utilized to reinforce building frames.
It mainly resists lateral stresses caused by wind,
earthquakes or other forces.
Background
There have been several studies have been focusing in the strengthening of frames. A recent study
conducted by Alahi and Vantandoost which focused on the redesigning of the brace from an X-structure to a
single diagonal precast prestressed concrete bracing was also published. Their results revealed on how
economical the single diagonal design was and how it characterized almost all the benefits of the previously
design X-structure

Background
Why Fiber Reinforced Concrete?
• Many studies about fibrous concrete have been already
published to improve characteristics like:
• Tensile and compressive strength
• Impact resistant
• And to reduce the brittleness of concrete

Objectives
Objectives

Main Objective:
To assess the strengthening effect of fiber reinforced precast prestressed concrete bracing
for existing concrete frames.

Specific Objectives:
 To utilize the software ABAQUS to design a fiber reinforced precast prestressed concrete brace.
 To utilize the software ABAQUS to simulate the response of the designed material to the stresses and
loads applied.
