INVERSE VARIATION

GRADE 9/SECOND QUARTER

OBJECTIVES:

 Statewhether two quantities are directly or inversely

related.
 Solve problems on inverse variations.
 Discusshow change in one of two inversely related
quantities relates to the other.
Review:
Direct variation:
1. If y varies directly as  y = kx
x, and y = 24 when x =  24 =k(6)
6, find the value of y  4=k
when x = 15
 y = 4x thus,
 y = 4(15)
1. Give examples of
quantities that vary  y = 60
directly.
THE HARE THE TORTOISE
Who are the main character of the story?
What is the story all about?
What do you think will happen when the hare
did not sleep?
What is the moral lesson of the story?
If you are given the chance to change the end
of the story, what would it be? Why?
GROUP ACTIVITY

 1. The class will be divided into groups of 5 members.

 2. Each group will be given materials such as, 12 congruent
square cutouts, table of values, pentel pen,
 3. The group will form different rectangles using 12 square
cutouts.
 4. The group will find the dimensions of each rectangle formed.
 5. Record it in the table of values.

H 2 6 12
QUESTIONS

 What happen to its width as the length of the

rectangle increases?
 What happen to its length as the width of the
rectangle increases?
 How does the change in one of the two
quantities related?
INVERSE VARIATION

 Letx and y denote two quantities. y varies inversely

as x, or y is inversely proportional to x, if there is a
nonzero constant k such that:
y = k/x.
 the number k is called the constant of variation.
DIRECT VS INVERSE
Decide whether the two quantities in the situation are directly or
inversely related. explain
 The side of a square is related to its perimeter.
DIRECT, AS THE SIDE INCREASES THE PERIMETER INCREASES

 The number of people sharing pizza is related to the size of the slice
each person gets.
INVERSE, AS THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE SHARING THE PIZZA
INCREASES, THE SIZE OF THE SLICE EACH GETS DECREASES
 The aged of used car is related to the price the owner can get for it.
INVERSE, AS THE AGED OF USED CAR INCREASES, THE PRICE THE OWNER
CAN GET FOR IT DECREASES.
 The time a painter paints a wall is related to the area of the wall
painted.
DIRECT, THE MORE TIME A PAINTER SPENDS PAINTING A WALL,
THE GREATER THE AREA OF THE WALL THST IS PAINTED
 The time a candle is used is related to the remaining length of the
candle.
A car is travelling a distance of 120
kilometers.

 a. How long will it take the car to reach its

destination if it travels at a speed of
i. 20 kph
ii. 40 kph

 When do we know that the two quantities are

inversely related? or directly related?
 Why do we need to know inverse variation?
How does the concept of inverse variation help
us in our real – life situation?
