Definition of Simple Past Tense

Simple past tense is a simple form of


verb to show facts of past events.
• in simple past tense, the time of
occurrence (yesterday, the last two days,
last year) or the arrival period (for two
months, for one day, for one hour) can
be specially adjusted. Simple past tense
can also be used to make type 2
conditional sentences.
Simple Past Tense
formula

Simple past tense is formed from verb-2 (past


tense) in the form of ordinary verbs or verb
"to be". Verb-2 is a bare infinitive (verb basic
form) with the addition of -ed, -en, -d, -t, -n,
or -ne for regular verbs or inconsistent forms
of irregular verbs, whereas in verb "to be" ,
verb-2 in the form of was and were.
• Regular and Irregular Verb
Was which is a singular verb is used in the
singular subject in the form of singular noun
(such as: Andi, book, and paint) and singular
pronoun (such as: I, she, he, and it) except
"you", otherwise were the plural verb used on
plural subject in the form of plural nouns (such
as cats, people, books), plural pronoun (such
as: you, they, we, and cats), compound
subjects with the conjunctions "and" (such as:
you and I, Andi and Susi), and you.

Functions and Examples of Simple Past Tense
Sentences
1. Simple past tense to discuss actions taken with a
certain duration of time in the past. The "to"
preposition can be used to determine the time
period of the event.
• Vina and I went to the Ragunan zoo three months
ago.
• Did he arrive on time yesterday?
2. Simple past tense to discuss habits in the past.
Subordinate conjunctions "when" are usually used
at this time.
• I often did exercises in the gym when I lived in
Bandung.
3. To show that there is a short past action (simple past
tense) that occurs when a long duration action (past
continuous tense) is in progress.
• I was reading a journal in the library when someone
burped out loud.
4. To show that an action (simple past tense) directly
follows the action that has been completed (past
perfect tense). I had finished my breakfast when he
picked me up
5. Simple past tense is used in conditional sentence
type 2.
