Status of Meat Production in

Pakistan

1
Status of Agriculture Sector during
2018-19 in Pakistan
Agriculture is a key to economic growth and poverty
alleviation in the country. It contributed 18.5 percent to
country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provided
38.5 percent employment to national labour force.
The performance of agriculture has declined and
cropped area of the five traditional crops has unchanged.
To ensure food security, it is necessary to increase per
acre yield. Although agriculture, livestock and fisheries
has great potential and hence these sectors on long-term
basis is of fundamental importance for country’s growth
and prosperity. This calls for efficient utilization of
production resources by adopting modern technologies
and establishment of realistic marketing system.
Status of Livestock Subsector:
Livestock subsector has been dominating the crop
subsector as the biggest contributor to value added in
agriculture for the last many years. It has contributed
60.5 % to the overall agricultural and 11.2 % to the
GDP during 2018-19 showing an increase of 4.0 % over
the same period last year.
It is not only a source of foreign exchange earnings
by contributing around 3.1% to the total exports.
It ensures food security by supplementing high value
protein of animal origin and also a source of 35-40% of
income for over 8 million rural families. In spite of its
inherent subsistence and traditional husbandry
practices, it has shown a healthy growth of 4.0 % in
2018-19 over the previous year of 2017-18.
What Is GDP?
• Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the total monetary or
market value of all the finished goods and services
produced within a country's borders in a specific time
period. As a broad measure of overall domestic
production, it functions as a comprehensive scorecard of
the country’s economic health.
• Written out, the equation for calculating GDP is:
• GDP = private consumption + gross investment +
government investment + government spending +
(exports – imports).
• For the gross domestic product, “gross” means that
the GDP measures production regardless of the various
uses to which the product can be put.
