• In the past 5 years SLU ECE board examinees performed below the
National Passing Percentage:
– 4 times in the April board exams
– Once in the October board exams
– Twice based on the annual average
Remarks from the 5-Year Data

• ECE Graduates in the Off-Season who take the April


Board Exams generally fare worse that the On-
Season graduates who take the October Board
Exams by a difference of 14.22 percentage points.

• A concrete action plan to address the poor


performance of off-season graduates and improve
the performance of on-season graduates must be
implemented.

Recommendations in the Area of Curriculum

• Electronics fundamentals could be reviewed at higher years


• Use the following reference books: Electrical and Electronic
Principles and Technology – John Bird, Electronic
Communication Systems – Louis E. Frenzel, Navy Electricity
and Electronics Training Series – Module 10, 11, 12, 24
• Suggestions for reference books (Electrical &Electronics
Principles and Technology by John Bird, Principles of
Electronic Communication System by Frenzel, MCQ’s for Mock
Boards, Indiabix)
• Return Review subject in the syllabus.
• Adding review subject as one of the regular subjects.
• Conduct review sessions or include a review session every
Saturdays.
Recommendations in the Area of Faculty
• Competent faculty should handle major subjects.
• Ensure that instructors are teaching the concepts well.
• Brief the students about taking the board exam.
• Tell the students to excel more in their academics.
• Check the questions given to students to be in line with
the topics discussed.
• Give a lot of objective type/ conceptual questions to
help improve the conceptual knowledge of students.
• Master the use of calculators.
• Teach the students how to review or study wisely.

• Check the questions given to students to be in line with the
topics discussed.
• Focus more on the basics and theory behind the process.

improve the conceptual knowledge of students.

• Use the following books: Electrical and Electronic Principles and

Action Plans
• Conduct capacity building in-house trainings to
improve instructional and technical competency of
faculty members.
• Conduct comprehensive examinations in the finals
for all major courses.
• Conduct supplementary review classes for students
under the old 2015 curriculum (since they do not
have unitized review courses in their curriculum)
with primary focus on electronics and calculator
techniques.
Action Plans
• Ensure quality of examinations through the strict
implementation of the TOS under the supervision of
the examination board.
• Implement a fixed percentage of board exam type
(MCQ) questions in the TOS of major examinations
for all professional courses.
• Craft and propose policy changes in faculty
evaluation to ensure quality instruction is
continuously delivered. (i.e. changes in the
evaluation tool as well as the conduct of student
evaluation)

• Ensure faculty specializations are prioritized in the
designation of teaching loads.
• Review primary reference books in electronics and
communication courses and implement necessary
changes if necessary.
• Craft and Propose a more effective retention policy.
• Maintain consistent standards across all courses
regardless of students’ standing.
• Craft a complete implementation plan with assigned
responsibilities and budget allocation. Coordinate
with the alumni in finalizing the implementation plan.
