INTRODUCTION
• Flexible electronics also known as flex circuits
• Assembling electronics circuits by mounting
electronic devices on flexible plastic substrates
• Well known for changing the shape by bending
which makes them user friendly.
Plastic Substrates
• Light Weight

• Ability to Bend or Roll.

• Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polyethylene

Naphthalate (PEN), and Polymide(PI), among which
PIs have been considered one of the promising
plastic substrates for flexible optoelectronic devices
due to their good Thermal stability, excellent
mechanical and dielectric properties.
Types of Plastic substrates
Technologies and Integration
Process
Any device that has to be manufactured should have
these 4 characteristics:

• Good performance, consistent and reliable.

• High tolerance yield.

• Simulations are available during development for both

reverse engineering and right-first-time design.

• Adequate contract life has been confirmed.

Flexible Electronics
Components
Electronic components such as Transistors are made
from silicon Nano-membrane usually called TFT’s(Thin
Film Transistors).

Diodes can be one of the most important component

as can be used as photovoltiac solar cells,
Photodiodes, and can also be used as LED,s.

Fabrication of such transistors are shown in the

upcoming slides.

Market Trend

Global Flexible electronic market revenue [3].

Applications
• Automotive field, space crafts, flexible displays.
• Military, electronic devices, healthcare.
• Displays and Human Machine Interaction.
• Energy Management and Mobile Devices.
• Flexible solar cells
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

Smaller space required Initial investment may be expensive

Light weight Integration of components would be

challenge for engineers

Increase current density Precision machines required

Foldable and bendable Manufacturing

Wide viewing angle

CONCLUSION
• Flexible electronics in future will play a huge role in
the field of security, entertainment and may lead to
innovative applications.
• The demand for flexible electronic products at
present may not be noticed but upto 2022 to 2023
huge demand and preference will be given to
flexible products in the market.
