Introduction: what is
Chandrayaan-II
Chandrayaan-II was the second lunar exploration mission conducted by ISRO
(Indian Space Research Organization) after their first mission Chandrayaan-I.
The total budget allocated for the mission was ₹ 978 crore ( US$141 million)
The spacecraft was launched on its mission to the Moon from
the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on
22 July 2019 at 2.43 PM IST by a Geosynchronous Satellite
Launch Vehicle MarkIII(GSLV Mk III). The craft reached
the Moon's orbit on 20 August 2019. The Chandrayaan-II was
initially scheduled to launch on 14 July 2019 with the landing
expected on 6 September 2019 but due to some technical
glitches it was rescheduled to 22 July 2019.
Objective of the
mission
Previously Chandrayaan-I was sent to the Moon. Which found water
molecules on the surface of the Moon.
To gather more information, ISRO decided to send Chandrayaan-II.
It was sent with an intention to test large amount of ice present on
the south pole of the Moon.
On the scientific side, the aim is to study Moon’s topography,
mineralogy, exosphere, hydroxyl signatures and water ice.
Components of
chandrayaan-II
Chandrayaan-II consisted of 3 main components –
1) THE ORBITER – Which would revolve around the Moon.
Weight – 2,379 kg ; Power – 1 kW ; Service Duration- 7 years
2) VIKRAM LANDER – Which would land on the surface of the Moon.
Weight – 1,471 kg ; Power – 650 W ; Service Duration – 14 days
3) PRAGYAN ROVER – Six wheeler robotic vehicle which would move on the surface of
of the Moon.
Weight - 27 kg ; Power – 50 W ; Service Duration – 14 days
What happened with
chandrayaan-ii
Chandrayaan-II’s lander and rover targeted for a location about 600 km
from the south pole which would have been the first time any mission
touched down so far from the equator. The lander was expected last 14
earth days because Chandrayaan-II was not programmed to heat itself
using solar energy to prevent it from cold lunar nights.
Everything was going right according to the plan of ISRO unless on Sept 7
little after midnight, Dr. K Sivan (Director of ISRO) confirmed that the
communication has been lost with the Chandrayaan-II VIKRAM LANDER.
“The performance was observed up to an altitude of 2.1 km,” Sivan said
in an announcement at mission control.
A plot comparing live data received to the mission’s trajectory suggested
that VIKRAM was about 1 km horizontally off-track from the targeted
landing site.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT ?
Millions of Indians watched the VIKRAM MOON LANDER’S final
heart stopping descent in the early hours of Sept 7. Despite its
failure, it is sited as a success by the people of India. Dr. K Sivan
told that the mission is 98% successful based on the findings. Nasa
claimed that Chandrayaan-II’s mission has inspired them.
Pallava Bagla a science writer has said that it would pave the way
for future India Mission to lland on mars and opened up the
possibility of india sending astronauts into space.
