1
Check valve ( Non Return valve)
A valve that permits flow in one direction only

A valve that closes to prevent backward flow of liquid.

Check valve or non return valve installed in pipe lines to allow flow in
one direction only.

Reason for using Check valve.

Protection of any item of equipment that can be affected
reverse flow
Prevention of flooding
Prevention on reverse flow on system shutdown
Prevention of flow under gravity
Relief of vacuum condition 2
Types of check valve

 Split Check valve

 Lift check valve
 Swing check valve
 Piston check valves
 Ball check valve
 Diaphragm check valve
 Disk Check valve
 Tilting Disk Check valve
3
Split Check valve
 Other name is butter fly check valve
 No limitation for size
 Installed on vertical or horizontal both
positions
 Lower pressure drop then other types
 Consist on dual plates

4
Split Check valve (Butter fly)

5
Split disc check valve
operation (Butter Fly valve)

6
Lift check valve
 Lift check valve configuration is similar to
globe valve
 Recommended for Vapor service
 Application where small amount of leakage under
reverse flow condition acceptable
 Install only horizontal pipe lines
 Required little maintenance
 Used on high temperature or pressure services
 Used liquid and gas both services
7
lift check valve

8
Swing check valve
 Installed horizontal & vertical both positions
 Used on liquid service
 Produce highly resistance to flow in open
position
 Used on corrosive services
 Used on 275bar or 600C

9
Swing check valve

10
Swing check valve Operation

11
Piston check valves
 Work as lift type check valve
 Install only horizontal pipe lines
 Use on water steam and air service

valves

14
Piston Type Check valve

15
Ball type check valve

Used for heavy fluids

installed horizontal &vertical both positions
Used only liquid services
Difficult to obtain tight seal
Consist on rubber coated metal ball

16
Ball check valve

18
Diaphragm check valve
 A Flexible rubber diaphragm is placed
mashed perforated cone
 Diaphragm valve is used to fluids below 180C
and 16bar

19
Diaphragm check valve

20
Tilting Disk Check valve
 This is similar to swing check valve
 Used only liquids
 This is open only full pressure other wise
remain closed
 Minimum resistance to flow

21
Tilting Disk Check valve

22
Disk Check valve
 It has four main parts body , disc, spring and
spring retainer
 Used in high temperature application
 Disk Check valve is smaller and lighter then
swing or lift check valve
 Reduce the noise
 Design for specific services

Inspection of check valves

 Check for pitting,rusting,scaling, on disc,flaper , ball
,piston seat.
 Check for pitting, rusting, scaling, on body seat.
 Check for any dent, bent or scratch on seat.
 Check hinge, pin, spring for any damage or
corrosion.
