SPRINKLER SYSTEM

SEMIPERMANENT INSTALLATIONS
There are semi-permanent installations
wherein the main lines are buried and the
lateral lines and sprinkles remain fixed during
the irrigation season.
PERMANENT SPRINKLER
Permanent sprinkler systems are
often used to apply small quantity of
irrigation water. It is well to remember
that wind may be a serious problem.
A variation of this system has
sprinklers mounted on quick coupling
riser so that they may be moved along
the buried lateral line. This reduces the
number of sprinklers and increases the
labor needed for operation of the
system.
PORTABLE SYSTEM
Semiportable
sprinkler systems
consist of buried
main pipe lines,
potable lateral
pipe lines and
sprinkle, and a
fixed pumping
plant.
FULLY PORTABLE SYSTEM
The fully portable
system has portable
lateral pipe lines with
sprinkles and portable
pumping plant. It can
be moved readily from
field to field, thus
extending its utility.
9.6 MOVING LATERAL LINES
Lateral lines containing sprinkles
can be moved by several
methods. The cheapest method
in terms of capital equipment
cost is the hand-move system
where the pipe is uncoupled.
Drag or tow-type laterals are
being used wherein the entire
line is pulled by a tractor or other
vehicle to its new location on
skids provided at each coupling.
• SIDE-ROLL SYSTEM
Side Roll is an aluminum pipe
(lateral) mounted on large
wheels. The Side Roll irrigates
in place (does not move while
irrigating) and it is moved from
position to position
between irrigation runs. An air-
cooled gasoline engine
provides the required power
to move the
aluminum sprinkler line across
the field.
• CENTER-PIVOT SYSTEM
Center-pivot
irrigation (sometimes
called central pivot
irrigation), also called
water-wheel and
circle irrigation, is a
method of
crop irrigation in which
equipment rotates
around a pivot and
crops are watered with
sprinklers.
9.7 GRAVITY SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
Often the most economical sprinkler system is
one utilizing a source of water adjacent to and
above the area to be irrigated.
No use of/ no expense for:
 Pump
 Motor
 Fuel
 Electricity
However, more main-line pipe must be
purchased to convey the water from the source
to the field than is required normally for a
pumped sprinkler system.
OTHER TYPES:
• BIG GUN/RAIN GUN SYSTEM
Rain guns are used for
irrigating large field areas
at once. The guns irrigate
the land with minimum
labor and electricity
requirements. While rain
gun irrigation, pests, and
insects get washed
away. The adjustable jet
breaker allows droplet
size & impact adjustment
facility for delicate crops.
9.8 SOURCES OF WATER AND METHODS OF DEVELOPING PRESSURE

Sprinkler system require

source of water free of
debris that would clog the
sprinklers. The best sources
of debris-free water are
wells and lakes. Screening
devices are usually
necessary to remove the
debris when water is taken
from irrigation canals or
rivers.
