FUTURE TIME

“The future depends on what you do today.”

PRESENT CONTINUOUS
FUTURE
Use for a fixed arrangement in the future e.g. an
event already written in a diary.
I’m meeting Sara at 5:30 P.M.
We’re staying at a small hotel for a week.

Note that there is usually a time reference.

So, WHY are we using the Present Continuous


here?

present continuous tense (subject + 'be’ +


verb+ing) to talk about future arrangements.
A future arrangement is a plan that you have
decided and organised with another person
PRESENT SIMPLE
Use for an event that always happens at a certain
time, or is part of a timetable.

The plane leaves at 5:00AM.


We have to hurry. The exam starts at 7:45.

So, WHY are we using the Present Simple


here?

We use present simple to refer to future for facts


that are fixed like a time-table, schedule,
calendar.

We use going to or will to make predictions

knowledge

Use future continuous
to describe an activity in progress in the future,
with a time reference.

Don’t call me at the office tomorrow. I will be
working at home.
FUTURE PERFECT

FORM: will + have + past participle


Use future perfect
to look back from the future to an earlier event,
often with by or by the time.
By the time we get home, the match will have
begun.
I’ll have finished my homework by the time the
show starts.

In sentences referring to the future, the verb
following the time word or phrase is present
simple, and the main verb is a will-future.

When we emphasize completion or achievement,
we can use a present perfect simple verb
instead of a present simple verb.
