PERSONALITY AND
SOCIALIZATION

SECTION 1
WHAT IS  It has been defined by sociologists as the lifelong
SOCIALIZATION? process of human interaction by which human
potential develops through the social learning of
culture.

 It takes place when man interacts with another man

and through this interaction, man learns culture.
 It can be generally defined as the totality of a person.
 All attributes of the person help shape his personality.
PERSONALITY
 Taking this into account, personality can be best
defined as a person’s fairly consistent pattern of
acting, thinking, and feeling (Macionis, 2007).

 Man acquires his personality through the process of

socialization.
 The personality of a person can be developed by
nature an by nurture.

 By nature, we mean to say that the biological factors

NATURE AND that makes the human being influences how his
personality will develop.
NURTURE
 Biological factors – it refers to the genes which a
man inherits from his parents. These genes are
determinants of a person’s personality.

 Nature refers to the factors present inside the genetic

make-up of a person.

 On the other hand, nurture pertains to the factors that

are outside of the person.
THEORIES OF
PERSONALITY

SECTION 2
 Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) an Austrian
psychologist devoted his life in studying the PERSONALITY
development of human personality. AND ITS
 He started as a doctor but later on shifted his career ELEMENTS
into the study of human psyche.

 He contented that human beings have two basic

needs; life instinct and death instinct
LIFE INSTINCT

Eρως (Eros) sexual and

TWO BASIC emotional
needs
NEEDS Θάνατος
(Thanatos) aggressive drive

DEATH INSTINCT
 In order to come up with a complete theory on how
personality is formed, Sigmund Freud added the three
parts of personality to his idea of the two basic needs
of humans

1. id (ιδ) – Latin word for it. It refers to the basic

human drives that are present in all human
beings from the moment of birth. It involves the
want and need to eat, drink, satisfaction,
pleasure and other.
2. ego (εγώ) – Latin word for I. It is the conscious
effort of an individual to strike a balance
between his primordial instincts and and the
normative demands of the society.
3. superego (ςυπερεγώ) – Latin word for above
ego. It pertains to the cultural normsand
standards that were internalized by the
individual.
