Make a sentence using the following

verbs under each picture.

Examine the paragraph. It contains sentences with
common errors in Subject-Verb agreement.
The number of recorded proverbs are
unknown. A number of them are from the Tagalog
regions. There’s many scholars who proved that
other regions also have their proverbs. Still, there
are those who think many proverbs have not yet
been recorded. Professor Jose, as well as Professor
Lacsamana have the same belief. One of theirs are
important to many folk literature scholars.
Professor Ruiz, who studied their findings are very
much interested in such finding.

VERB AGREEMENT

A singular subject must have a


singular verb. A plural subject
must have a plural verb.
EXAMPLES
Father drives to work.
(singular subject and verb)
The actors are on the stage.
(plural subject and verb)
A compound subject joined
by AND is generally plural
and must have a plural
verb.
EXAMPLE
Joanna and Alexia
join the party.
A compound subject referring
to the same person or closely
related ideas may take a
singular verb.
EXAMPLES
My adviser and Math teacher
often gives me advice.
Spaghetti and meatballs is my
favourite food.
Compound subjects joined by
EITHER-OR, NEITHER-NOR, the
verb must agree with the
nearer subject.
EXAMPLES
Either my classmate Susie or my
friends are to be invited.
Neither my cousins nor Jake
wants to make the delivery.
We use:
THERE IS for singular
and THERE ARE for
plural.
EXAMPLES
• There is one table in the classroom.
• There are three chairs in the
classroom.
• There is a spider in the bath.
• There are many people at the bus
stop.
THE NUMBER takes a
singular form of the
verb.
A NUMBER takes a
plural form of the
verb.
EXAMPLES
The number of people we
need to hire is thirteen.
A number of people have
written in about this
subject.
Indefinite pronouns each,
every, either, anyone,
somebody, nobody,
everybody, someone, anyone
and everyone are singular.
They require singular verbs.
EXAMPLES
Someone has to assume
leadership.
Everybody needs to do
the task.
INTERVENING WORDS,
PHRASES do not affect
the subject and verb
agreement.
EXAMPLES
- Snowstorms, as well as strong wind,
often keep people away from mountain
passes.
- In North America, snow, together with
ice and wind, causes problems in the
upper Midwest.
- The silt from the Mississippi and Ohio
rivers enriches nearby farmland.
