Software
A computer software also called program is a series of
instructions that tells the computer what to do and how
to do .
A program is a series of instructions that enables the
computer hardware to work .
Software can be categorizes as
(1)System software
(a) operating system
(b) utility program
(2)Application software
System software :Background software that includes
programs that helps the computer to manage its own
internal resources
The collection of programs that controls the basic
operations of computer hardware.
Its two types are (a) Operating system (b) Utility program
Operating system :a set of programs that coordinates all
the activities among computer hardware devices .it
allows users to run application program.
Utility program: A small program, or set of small
programs, that supports the OS by providing additional
services that the OS does not provide. Some services
they commonly provide are: disk backup, disk
optimization, file recovery, safe formatting, and
resource editing, diagnostic programs, trace programs.
Application software :Application software consists of
programs that perform specific tasks for users.

Software forms

 Application software is available in a variety of


forms:
 Packaged software,
 Custom software ,
 Shareware software,
 Freeware software ,
 Public-domain software.
Packaged software

 It is a copyrighted software.
 Also known as off-the-shelf software , uncustomized
software packages, which exist for a wide range of
applications and industries
 Describes ready-made software products that can be readily
obtained from software vendors, and which generally require
little modification or customization
 Integrated software designed to fulfill a whole range of
business functions, and these offerings became known as
packaged software.
 Word processing and spreadsheets are examples
Custom software

 It is copyrighted software,
 Perform functions specific to a business or industry
,
 Sometimes a company can not find packaged
software that meets the needs its unique
requirements in this case company use a
programmer to develop custom software which
usually cost more than packaged software
customization

Modification of packaged software to meet individual


requirements. Before an enterprise can automate its
operations using packaged software, it must first make sure
that the software caters for all the processes it needs to
automate. This step is called implementation. If the software
already includes all the necessary capabilities, it is simply a
matter of selecting the correct configuration (often a
complex operation in itself). Adding extra capabilities that
are not included in the off-the-shelf package involves
writing additional software code. This is known as
customization
Shareware

• It is copyrighted software ,
• Distributed free for a trial period ,
• To use beyond that period you have to pay to the
person or company ,
Freeware

• It is copyrighted software ,
• Free to use for all time ,
• No trial period .
Public-domain software

• No copy rights ,
• Free software ,
• It has been donated for public use ,
• Anyone can copy or distribute to others .
