Differentiated Classroom

Management: Creation and

Implementation of a Better
Learning Environment for
Generation Z
KEY COMPONENTS
A. Classroom Management

B. Differentiated Instructions

C. Creation and Implementation

D. Generation Z
LEARNERS

- Are unique

- Has their own individual needs

LET’S FOCUS ON GENERATION Z!
Huh! Generation what?

Who are they?

Students who grew up with the emerging
technologies at their fingertips
They are the ones who live in an open book
environment – just a few clicks away from
information
They connect to a borderless world
across countries and cultures
They communicate in post-literate community
where texts and tweets are brief and where visuals
and videos get the most cut-throughs
HEY TEACHERS

REMEMBER!
Teachers MUST see the uniqueness and
different needs of the GEN Z students
Good teachers – think of ways to address
each uniqueness and needs
Better Teachers – think of better ways to
address individual uniqueness and needs
Best Teachers – think of and create the
best ways to address each uniqueness
and needs… and implement them!
OUR PROBLEM?
How do WE deliver lessons, the
best way possible?
THE SOLUTION?

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTIONS!
What? …..Differentiated Instructions???

According to Tomlinson
it is factoring students’
individual learning styles and levels of
readiness first before designing a
lesson plan
Why Differentiated Instructions?

Research shows…
this method benefits more
students - from those with learning
disabilities to those who are
considered with high ability to
learn
OK! EXPLANATIONS PLEASEEEEE!!!
Differentiated Learning…
is teaching the same material to all
students using a variety of instructional
strategies
requires delivery of lessons at different
levels of difficulty based on the ability of
each student
THUS,

it means…
WORK!
MORE WORK!
and LOTS AND LOTS OF WORK
…for the teacher
Why not the conventional way of
teaching?

BECAUSE,
according to studies…

LECTURES ARE
BOOOOOORING
and
INEFFECTIVE!!!
But, I want my students to learn, really learn our lessons…

Teachers may…
 design lessons based on LEARNING STYLES
 group students by shared interest, topic, or ability for
assignments
 assess students’ learning
using formative assessment
 manage classroom to create
safe and supportive environment
 continuous assessment and
adjustment of lesson content to
meet students’ needs
AGAIN PLEASE!!!
Here it is:
Differentiated instruction is based
on the theory that teachers must
structure and tailor their lessons to
ensure that they are aligned to
students’ skills and needs
So…
when planning classroom
management, we face the
Herculian task of taking student
differences into consideration
each time we plan lessons and
activities
Instead of…
Teaching to the “middle”,
we get to know the learning
styles of our learners and we
adapt! Its not the other way
around
To use Differentiated Instruction is to
determine the types of students one has, as
they can be…

Visual (spatial) prefer using pictures, images, and spatial

understanding
Aural (auditory-musical) prefer using sound
and music.
Verbal (linguistic) prefer using words,
both in speech and writing
Physical (kinesthetic) prefer using your
body, hands and sense of touch
Logical (mathematical) prefer using
logic, reasoning and systems
Social (interpersonal) prefer to learn in
groups or with other people
Solitary (intrapersonal) prefer to work alone
and use self-study.
Thus,
to become the best teacher is to be more
observant of our students as these seven affects
how they will learn what we are giving them
Let us then use the 4 ways to differentiate
instruction, Tomlinson listed according to:

A.Content
B. Process
C. Product
D. Learning environment
With the 7 learning styles in mind, how,
how, and more how?

a. Content – covered by standards of learning set by the

school or state
Teachers must keep in mind that;
 some students may not be familiar with the concepts
being taught
 Some may have partial mastery
 And some may be very familiar even before the lesson
begins
How do we design activities then
based on content?
We go…
classification of levels of
intellectual behavior from
lower-order thinking skills to
higher-order skills.
We divide our students according to
the six levels
a. Remembering and understanding tasks may be
given to those who are unfamiliar with the lesson
b. Applying and analyzing works maybe given to
those who are somewhat familiar with the lesson
c. Evaluating and creating may be assigned to those
who have high levels of mastery of the lesson
EXAMPLE

 Match vocabulary words to definitions

 Read a passage or text and answer related questions
 Think of situation that happened to a character in the
story and a different outcome
 differentiate an author’s position and provide evidence
to support this viewpoint
 Create a powerpoint presentation summarizing the
lesson
How about Process?

Always remember that students

has a preferred learning style
and successful differentiation
includes delivery of material to
each learning styles
Process – related method addresses
the following;
 not all students require the same attention from the
teacher
 students have the liberty to choose to work in pairs,
small groups or individually
 while some may benefit from one-on-one interaction
with the teacher, others may independently progress
Thus, teachers enhance student learning by offering
support based on individual needs.
EXAMPLE

Provide textbooks for visual and word

learners
Allow auditory learners to listen to audio
books
Give kinesthetic learners to complete an
interactive assignment online
Then comes, the Product…

This is what student

creates at the end of the
lesson to demonstrate
mastery of the content
This can be…

In the form of tests, projects,

reports or other activities
Or assign students to complete
activities that show mastery of a
concept based on their learning
style
EXAMPLE

Read and write learners may write a book

report
Visual learners may create a graphic
organizer of the story or a topic
Auditory learners may give an oral report
Kinesthetic learners may build a diorama
illustrating the story or the topic
And lastly, the learning
environment

Conditions for optimal

learning include both
physical and
psychological elements .
A flexible classroom layout must:

Incorporate various types of furniture and

arrangements to support both individual
and group work
Psychologically, teachers should use the
classroom management techniques that
support a safe and supportive learning
environment
EXAMPLE

Break some students into reading

groups to discuss the assignment
Allow students to read
individually
Create quiet spaces where there
are no distractions
Brace yourself! We are dealing with
Generation Z who are:

Social
Learning takes place outside the
classroom, though the essential
engagement and practice is still
conducted at school by a facilitator,
rather than a teacher
Mobile

 They are mobile in terms of the jobs they will have

and the homes they will live in
Thus,
 It is very important to design learning that will
equip this generation with not just content but
resilience in a changing world
Global

 They are the generation most likely to work in

multiple countries
 Most globally connected and influenced
generation in history
 Not limited to the local, but are global as never
before
Digital

 Often they are called, Gen Alpha, but are also called
Generation Glass, as they not only learn through pen
and paper but iPads and screens designed not just to
display the written but also the visual
 They need not only literacy but digital skills as well, to
thrive in a changing world
Visual

 Communication is more image-based and signs, logos and

brands
 They interact across language barriers with colors and
pictures rather than words and phrases
 Visual and hands-on learning styles is more dominant than
auditory delivery
Generation Z Learning
Environment
 Reconfigured and rewired to accommodate
new students, new technologies and new
learning styles
Content can be accessed through
technology anywhere, often in visual and
engaging forms
Today’s education must learn to speak
Gen Z’s language creating learning
opportunities that match their digital
skills
TRADITIONAL GENERATION Z
LEARNING LEARNING
Differentiated Instruction
in Generation Z
classrooms?
a. Generation Z lives in a different culture from
us—a visual, multimedia, hyperlinked culture.
 Their work will reflect more of a focus on HOTS,
critical thinking, problem solving, and twenty-
first century influences as well as the traditional
LOTS. .
b. Lead Generation Z students towards the pathways to
discovery. let students collaborate and create real world
products or find solutions to a problem.
c. Learn to “teach lazy” and to move away from
being the expert “sage on the stage” to, rather, a
facilitator of learning or the “guide on the side”
d. Teachers must build a bridge between our world and
theirs. Change is no longer measured in centuries or
decades but in nano seconds, we must embrace it.
LET’S WRAP THINGS UP!
TOMLINSON TELLS US TO ASK THE
FOLLOWING VERY IMPORTANT QUESTIONS!

1. DO I INTEND TO TEACH EACH INDIVIDUAL CHILD?

2. WHAT ARE THEIR PARTICULAR INTERESTS AND NEEDS?
3. WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS DOES EACH CHILD HAVE?
4. WHAT CAN I DO TO ENSURE THAT EACH STUDENT WORKS AT THE HIGHEST
LEVEL OF THOUGHT AND PRODUCTION POSSIBLE?
5. FOR EACH CHILD, WHAT WILL RELEASE THE MOTIVATION BORN IN ALL
HUMANS?
6. HOW CAN I ADAPT MY AGENDA TO WORK FOR MY STUDENTS?
7. WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES WILL BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE CATALYST OF THIS
STUDENT’S DEVELOPMENT?
THESE QUESTIONS ARE
GUIDEPOSTS SO WE CAN
ACHIEVE AND MAINTAIN
EXCELLENCE AND EQUITY
INSIDE THE CLASSROOM
CAROL TOMLINSON STATED…

“THAT THE TWIN GOALS OF

EXCELLENCE AND EQUITY
WILL HELP ENSURE THAT
DOORS REMAIN OPEN SO
THAT ALL STUDENTS HAVE A
PROMISING TOMORROW”
