meet the demand for the most popular activities, the 'core activities', within each
planning district. Should there be scope, the range of facilities should be widened
to enable provision be made for special activities.

(B)QUALITY :
Recreation facilities and open space provided should be of a high quality, in terms of
facilities, layout and design, which meet the needs and aspirations of the users.
They should also meet environmental standards, and contribute to good civic
design.
PRINCIPLES OF RECREATIONAL SPACES

(C)GOOD PRACTICE :

 To provide easy access, encourage optimum usage and enable

complementary improvements to the environment,

open space and recreation facilities should be provided within an

integrated recreation and open space framework incorporating continuous

pedestrian and/or cycle links

The Scope of the Recreational Areas Strategy is potentially:

1. Regional recreation areas within the expanded urban area

2. District recreation areas within the expanded urban area
3. Neighborhood recreation areas within the expanded urban area
4. Open space corridors that link recreational areas.

1. Regional recreation areas: Large, high quality and accessible recreation areas
that are not common elsewhere in the region that specially attract visitors
from beyond the city.
• Also includes recreational areas which are often used by tourists as part of
the city’s tourist attractions.
• Example : open plaza or piazza in front of an important building.
2. District recreational areas: Generally not as visible, large or well
developed as the regional parks whilst bigger, fewer in number but
not as conveniently located as neighborhood parks.
• Used primarily by residents of the city who commute to the site
with a specific activity in the mind.

3. Neighborhood recreation areas: Small, multi purpose parks designed to

supplement private open space.
• They occur quite frequently as the intent is that the users should be able
to reach the park on foot.
