The use depends on the first SOUND of the Word, If is a VOWEL

you will use AN
I eat an apple. (Yo como una manzana)

You have an orange. (Tú tienes una naranja)

If the first SOUND is a CONSONANT, you will use A

I have a dog. (Yo tengo un perro)

This is a cat. (Esto es un gato)

When the H Sound is a consonant, we use A as an articule.

We buy a house in California. (Compramos una casa en California)

I was a hostage for three days. (Fui un rehén por tres días)
Are you going to a Halloween party? (¿Irás a una fiesta del día de brujas?)

However, there are H Sounds whose sound is mute.

We were supposed to be there an hour ago
Hour (Se supone que debimos estar ahí hace una hora)

Honest I am an honest man.

(Soy un hombre honesto)

(Creo que ese es un holograma)
When the sound of U is different from vowel like O, we have to use AN

Unfortunate. (Desafortunado)
Ugly. (Feo)
Unfair. (Injusto)

He is an unfortunate man. (Él es un hombre desafortunado)

That’s an ugly dog. (Ese es un perro feo)
Is an unfair situation. (Es una situación injusta)
