The Greed of the Lord – reason for
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s appearance
 Internal Cause of Appearance :
 The first greed is :
 What is the love of Radharani and how can I relish it? The second
greed: What is My excellent all-attractive beauty? I can’t relish
Myself. So how can I have it? And the third greed: What happiness
does Radharani get by relishing My all-attractive excellent
beauty? How can I have it? The desire to fulfill these three types of
greeds remains unfulfilled in the pastimes of Krishna. Therefore the
Lord appeared again as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The fulfillment of
these types of desires is antaranga karanam, the internal cause, for
Lord Chaitanya’s descent.
 External Cause of Appearance :
 The external cause is to teach Kali-yuga dharma, the religion for Kali-
yuga, the Age of Quarrel. That religion is hari-sankirtana, the
chanting of the holy name.
 Sri Adviata Acharya and Sri haridas Thakur did austerity for the
incarnation.

Biography
 The early life of the Lord is most
fascinatingly expressed by Vrndavana Dasa
Thakura, the author of Chaitanya-Bhagavata,
 and as far as the teachings are concerned, they
are more vividly explained in the Chaitanya-
Caritamata by Srila Krsna Dasa Kaviraja
Gosvami.
Biography
 The Lord's early life was recorded by His
chief devotees and contemporaries, namely
Srila Murari Gupt, a medical practitioner of
that time,
 and the latter part of the life of Sri
Caitanya Mahaprabhu was recorded by His
private secretary Sri Damodara Gosvami &
Srila Svarupa Damodara, who was practically a
constant companion of the Lord at Puri.
Who was Chaitanya Mahaprabhu?
 Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was a great Saint and devotee
of Shree Krishna. He popularized the process of Naam
Sankirtan (Congregational chanting of the names of
God), which is very simple, yet extremely powerful
technique for increasing love for God.

Turning Point
 He travelled to Gaya for
performing the shraadha
ceremony of his father, and
there he met his Guru, Ishwar
Puri.
 This meeting transformed
him completely from a scholar
to a devotee.
 He would now constantly
chant the names of Shree
Krishna and dance in ecstasy.
 Sometime he would be so
observed in devotion(love for
God) that he would laugh,
weep, fall on the ground and
roll in the dust.
 He would cry for Lord
Krishna, oblivious to his
surroundings.
Sankirtan Movement
 Once Mahaprabhu met one
ascetic named
Nitai(Nityananda). He was
ascetic from a very young age
and wandered about in
search of Krishna.
 When they met each other
they become intimate, like
brothers.
 Mahaprabhu instructed Nitai
and other devotees to go door
to door , requesting them to
chant the name of Krishna.
 People would come out and
chant the name on the streets
of Nabdwip. This is called
sankirtan movement.
Story: Forgiveness(Jagai and Madhai turned
as Jagdanand and Madhavanand)
 Jagai and Madhai were the notorious
criminals in the area of Nabdwip. They
were also habitual drunkards.
Nityananda decided to convert these
sinners, to reveal the glory of
Mahabrabhu compassion.
 A procession was organized to the home
of Jagai and Madhai, doing kirtan all the
way. Nitai was leading the group. When
he came across the two, he asked them to
take the name of Shree Krishna. This
angered Madhai attacked Nitai with a
piece of a broken pot. Blood gushed
from the wound.
 When Mahaprabhu heard of the attack
on Nitai by Jagai and Madhai, he flew
into a rage and wanted to kill brothers
with his divine chakra. Niatai begged
him to pardon these two sinners. Moved
by Nitai’s compassion ,two criminal
hearts melted and they become disciples
of Mahaprabhu.
Sankirtan Movement
 Niamai and Nitai would conduct
sankirtans in various places in
Nabadwip, chanting the names
of Radha Krishna. They would
conduct religious processions,
where devotees went dancing
and singing through the streets.
Thousands would join them and
in a natural and easy way, evoke
love for God within their hearts.
 At the age of 24, chaitanya
Mahaprabhu decided to take
sanyas for the well fare of
human society.
 After becoming a sanyasi,
Mahaprabhu went to Jagannath
Puri.

Pastimes at Jaganath
He walked from his hometown
Puri
Nabadwip to puri a distance of
around 368 miles.
 When he entered temple of Lord
Jagannath, he was so overwhelmed
by love for God, that he fainted in
ecstasy.
 At that time Sarvabhauma
Bhattacharya, the most learned
scholar of vedic scriptures in Puri
happened to enter the temple.
 He saw the highest symptoms of
devotion manifesting in the body of
Mahaprabhu.
 He had Mahaprabhu’s unconsious
body carried to his house.
 Mahaprabhu returned to
consciousness only when the name
of “Hari “ was chanted in his ears.
Pastimes in Puri
24 years
 A debate ensued between
Mahaprabhu and Sarvabhauma
Bhattacharya. With utmost mastery
of the vedic scriptures ,
Mahaprabhu convinced
Sarvabhuma that love for God is
the ultimate goal of Human life.
Sarvabhauma was so impressed that
from being a dry scholar he was
transformed into a devotee .
 Mahaprabhu then revealed His
divinity to him, by showing him six
armed form, with two arms of Shree
Krishna( holding the flute) two
arms of Shree Ram(holding the bow
and arrow), and two arms of
sanyasi(holding the staff and bowl
of a monk).

In puri, Rath Yatra is the biggest festival. Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu would celebrate it joyfully. In front of
the chariot, he would dance with his devotees playing
drums and cymbals etc.
Later Years of Mahaprabhu
 In his later years, Mahaprbhu stopped interacting with
people. He spent his time in a small room, called
“Gambhira”.
 All day and night, he would long to meet God, in the mood
of Radharani’s longing for Shree Krishna.
 During this period of his life he displayed the highest levels
of divine love or love for God, that have inspired devotees
ever since.
 It is believed that he entered the temple of Lord Jagannath,
and walked into the deity, merging himself with the Lord.
 The servants of God urge people to
become devotees of the Lord. They never
tolerate being called God. Sri Caitanya
Mahaprabhu was God Himself, but He played
the part of a devotee. When people addressed
Him as God, He used to block His ears with
His hands and chant the name of Lord Vishnu.
He strongly protested against being called
God, although undoubtedly He was God
Himself.
He is a Social Reformer
 Lord Caitanya said that one who is master in the
science of Krishna Consciousness, regardless of his
social position, is the real spiritual master.
CC Madhya 8/128
Each one teach one
Lord Caitanya accepts
all kinds of sinful persons
on the one condition that
they promise not to indulge
in sinful habits after being
spiritually initiated by the
bona fide spiritual master.
His Teachings
 Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu preached the Srimad-Bhagavatam and propagated the
teachings of the Bhagavad-gita in the most practical way.
 The essence of His teachings is recorded in Chaitanya Manjusha .
 Lord Sri Krsna, who appeared as the son of the King of Vraja (Nanda Maharaja), is the
Supreme Personality of Godhead and is worship able by all.
 Vrindavana-Dhama is non-different from the Lord and hence is as worship able as the
Lord.
 The highest form of transcendental worship of the Lord was exhibited by the damsels
of Vrajabhumi.
 Srimad-Bhagavata Purana is the spotless literature for understanding the Lord.
 The ultimate goal of human life is to attain the stage of prema, or love of God.
 His instructions to Srila Rupa Gosvami and Srila Sanatana Gosvami, His discussions
with Ramananda Raya, the debate with the Mayavadi sannyasi Prakashananda
Sarasvati and the Vedanta Sutra Discussion between Him and Sarvabhauma
Bhattacharya are the excellent sources through which we understand His teachings in
detail.
 The Lord left only eight slokas of His instructions in writing, and they are known as
the Siksastaka. All other literatures based on His teachings were extensively written
by the Lord's principal followers, the six Gosvamis of Vrndavana, and their followers.

His Mission-Universal Religion
 The teaching of Caitanya philosophy is richer
than any other, and it is the living religion of the
day with the potency for spreading as visva-
dharma, or universal religion.
 Sastras have recommended for this age a common
platform for realization, namely chanting the holy
names of the Lord. People can hold meetings to glorify
the Lord in their respective languages and with
melodious songs, and if such performances are
executed in an offense less manner.
 Reason: to attain spiritual perfection without having
to undergo more rigorous methods.

 13th chapter of Adi Lila of CC where Krishna Das Kaviraj says who ever listen this great lila , one will
get special mercy of Lord Krishna.
 To know more about CM, one should read CC.(adi with 17 chapters –Madhya with 25 chapters –anth
with 20 chapters)
 First name came than CM appeared. He started His mission of spreading Hari naam before He
appeared.
 Sri Krishna Chaitanya radha Krishna nahi anya brijender nandan aei sachi suda ele hui balram hoile

 Bhakti is soul’s subject not body’s.bhakti atam ka vishai hai sharir ka nahi.Body is the via media to
attain Bhakti.
 Why lord came down to teach bhakti himself: Like a teacher know every thing but still he start with
his students from scratch and get involved with his students accordingly Lord CM got involved in
describing the bhakti.
 Like every child has the propensity to walk but mother and father guide the child and he starts
walking accordingly the soul has the propensity to chant but we have to guide the soul.
 The way death the firmed , same way our liberation is firmed if we take the shelter of Hari Naam
 There is no difference between the teachings of Lord Krishna and Lord CM rather CM practically
shown how to perform bhakti as described by Krishna in 18.66.
 Definition of a pure devotee: one who is always in
surrender mode like a child.
 6 stages of surrender : accept what ever is favorable for
bhakti and leave unfavorable, depend only on Lord’s
mercy , service should be the motto , always courteous
