What is Social Media?
Social Media is the collective of online
communication channels. It is also a
source of connection with the distance
people or getting information about our
surrounding.
According to Ellison (2007) being involved in social media
(Social networking) is one of the most active web-based
activities in the Philippines. Because of this, Filipinos are
declared to be the most active users in a number of web-
based social network sites, such as Facebook, Instagram,
Snap chat and Twitter. The use of social networking
websites has become so extensive that the country is now
called "The Social Networking Capital of the World." In
fact, social media related activities are also used in the
Philippines as a form of election campaign material, as
well as political, marketing and propaganda tools. Indeed,
social media continues to change the way we live.
 What are the factors that causes
students to get addicted to social
media?
Social media attract mostly students
wherein accordingly it is their outlet of different
emotions they experience every now and then.
Thus, it links the person into Isolation,
depression, insecurity, jealousy and poor self-
esteem.
There are some factors that will let the person
hooked to social media like the illusion that a
person he/she wiil feel that h/she is popular
due to the number of friends/followers,
another factors are, pictures of a group of
friends that you can consider yourself to be
close to but weren’t invited to join them,
seeing pictures of a happy people enjoying
their lives, which creates sadness and jealousy
because of comparison with your present life
and what you see in social media.
Few likes on your post from other and it
will somehow results into
disappointment and decrease of self-
esteem being directly affected to a
picture or message that you personally
posted. Thus every effects has
relationship on how thus a person
respond to social media (Nick Zargosk,
2017)
 The effects of social media in their
academic performance.
Students spend more time more time on social media
than they do using personnel email. Even though, there is
a loss of privacy and safety, social media provides
opportunities for connecting with friends, classmates, and
people with shared interest. Today the main aim of the
students should be education and their future career.
However, many students rely on the accessibility of
information or social media that means reduced on
learning and refraining information (Sara Selvaraj, 2013).
The most important things in a students life are
studying, learning good habits and gaining knowledge
to become a person with moral character. But today,
as we see in various studies, this optimal learning
process is seriously jeopardized by students becoming
entrapped by the ploys of social networking websites.
Students neglected their studies by spending time on
social networking websites rather than studying or
interacting with people in person. Actively and
frequently participating in social networking can
negatively affect their grades or hamper their
journeys to their future career.
How do they cope up ?
These are some reasons by Janelle Cox (2010) why
students’ needs social media for educational purposes.
Firstly social media technology in the classroom helps to
increase students knowledge. According to her, using
social media sites in the classroom is an effective way
for the students to increase their knowledge about
current boundaries. As long as you set some boundaries
and show your students what it can and cannot be used
for in the classroom, it can be an effective way to
increase knowledge.
Second, allows students to get help from others,
social media sites can be useful for students to get
help from peers or other relevant experts. And the
third, can encourage students participation. One of
the great things about using social media in education
is that it encourage students to participate, especially
for those shy students who don’t like to talk in class.
Social media can help make these types of students
more confident in speaking their opinions through the
use of social media.
