The refusal of something requested or desired

What is Denial?
 A defense mechanism in which the existence of
unpleasant internal or external realities is kept out
of conscious awareness.
 A refusal to comply with or satisfy a request.
 An unconscious defense mechanism in which
emotional conflict and anxiety are avoided by
refusal to acknowledge those thoughts, feelings,
desires, impluses, or facts that are consciously
intolerable.

Denial as a coping mechanism

An unconscious psychological strategy that people


use to help their ego.

The ability of the people to protect themselves in this


way can be beneficial but sometimes a defense
mechanism will prevent people from enjoying life.

Denial can give people a bit time to adjust to
challenging life event.

 It can prevent people from making rash decisions.

It can help to protect the ego from something that


would cause a great deal of suffering.

 The person is a master at using denial to protect
their substance abuse.
Examples:
1.The real problem is other people judging them.
2. Their family stresses them out so they need to
unwind with alcohol and drugs.
3. They have a job they hate and a boss who makes
their life miserable.

5. Their lack of employment opportunities it the real
problem.
6. The country is being ruined by the government and
this is why their life is so miserable.

HOW TO ESCAPE DENIAL
 Therapist is trained to help substance abusers come
to terms with their problems.
 A journal can be extremely helpful for alcoholics in
denial. They may not even realize how much they
are drinking and how it is impacting their life.
 Even if the individual is convinced that they are not
an addict it may still be beneficial for them to
attend recovery fellowship meetings that will
resonate with them.

HOW TO ESCAPE DENIAL
 Talking to people who have already achieved
sobriety can help an addict see beyond their
denial.
 If the person is protected in any way from the
consequences of their behavior it can keep them in
denial.
 Reading educational material about addiction and
recovery can be highly beneficial at helping people
see beyond denial.

 The choice to refuse reality, then, is unconscious as
well. Refusal to admit to or accept a truth or fact
differs from denial in that the individual recognizes
or is conscious of the existence of the truth or fact
but consciously refuses to accept it as such.
