WHAT WERE THE MOROS
FIGHTING FOR?
They are bound together by religion,
mostly Sunni Islam, and have been
fighting for independence, as well
as a desire to conquer the entire
country, for well over a hundred
years. The Philippine military and
police are in a constant battle with
Moros, and many are killed on each
side.

Filipino Muslims are called Moros,
a term given them by the Spanish.
Moros is Spanish for Moors, the
term the Spaniards used to
describe the Muslims in Morocco.
The Spanish fought the Moors
from North Africa in the Middle
Ages.
MORO MORO
The collective term Moro people or
Bangsamoro people refers to the
13 Islamized ethnolinguistic
groups of Mindanao, Sulu, and
Palawan. As Muslim-majority
ethnic groups, they form the
largest non-Christian majority
population in the country, and
comprise about 11% of the total
Philippine population, or 10
million people.
The Muslim Moros originally
had an independent state known
as the Sulu Sultanate, which
once exercised sovereignty over
the present day provinces of
Basilan, Palawan, Sulu, Tawi-
Tawi, the eastern part of the
Malaysian state of Sabah
(formerly North Borneo) and
North Kalimantan in
Indonesia.
PURPOSE OF BANGSAMORO
Republic Act 11054, or the Organic
Law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous
Region in Muslim Mindanao
RA 6734 which established the
Autonomous Region in Muslim
Mindanao.
The Bangsamoro Organic Law is the
product of years of negotiations
between the government and the
Moro
Islamic Liberation Front, the Philippines’
largest Muslim separatist group. The law
aims to “establish a political entity, provide
its basic structure of government in
recognition of the justness and legitimacy
of the cause of the Bangsamoro people and
the aspirations of Muslim Filipinos and all
indigenous cultural communities in the
Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in
Muslim Mindanao to secure their identity
and posterity, allowing for meaningful self-
governance within the framework of the
Constitution and the national sovereignty
as well as territorial integrity of the
Republic of the Philippines.”

BANGSAMORO PEACE
AGREEMENT
The Comprehensive Agreement
on Bangsamoro (CAB) is a final
peace agreement signed between
the Government of the
Philippines and the Moro
Islamic Liberation Front on 27
March 2014 at the Malacañang
Palace in Manila.
