Spain (1882-1885)
Rizal's Secret Mission
• The missiom which Rizal conceived wit
h the approval of his older brother Paci
ano was to observe keenly the life and
culture, languages and customs, indust
ries, and commerce, and governments
and laws of the European nations in or
der to prepare himself in the mighty ta
sk of liberating his oppressed people fr
om spanish tryranny
• May 20, 1892, Manila Paciano wrote a l
etter to Rizal.
Secret Departure for Spain
• It kept secret to avoid detection by Spanish a
uthorities and the friars.
• He wrote a farewell etter for his beloved pare
nts and for his sweetheart Leonor Rivera.
• May 3, 1882, Rizal departed on board the Sp
anish steamer Salvadora bound for Singapor
e.
Singapore
• May 8, 1882, while the steamer was approac
hing Singapore, Rizal saw a beautiful island.
Fascinated by its scenic beauty, he rememb
ered "Talim Island with the Susong Dalaga".
• May 9, 1882, the Salvadora docked at Singa
pore, Rizal landed, registered at Hotel de la
paz and spent two days.
From Singapore to Colombo
• Rizal transferred to another ahip Djemnah, F
rench Steamer on May 11.
• On May 17, the Djemnah reached Point Gall
e, a seacoast town in Southen Ceylon (Sri L
anka).
First Trip Through Suez Can
al
• Djemnah continued the voyage crossing the
Indian Ocean to the Cape of Guardfui, Africa
.
• The next stopover in Aden.
• It tooke five days to traverse the Suez Canal
(Built by Ferdinand de Lesseps, November 1
7, 1869.
Naples and Marseilles
• June 11, Rizal reached Naples.
• June 12, the steamer docked at the French h
arbor of Marseilles. He visited the famous Ch
ateau d'If.
Barcelona
• On the afternoon of May 15, Rizal left Marseilles by
train for the last lap of his trip to Spain.
• June 16, 1882, Rizal reached the Barcelona.
• "Amor Patrio" (Love of Country), Laong Laan (P
en name of rizal) It appeared in Diariong Tagalog
on August 20, 1882. It won Juventud Filipina
• Second article, Los Viajes(Travels).

Life of Madrid
• On November 3, 1882, Rizal enrolled in the
Universidad Central de Madrid in two course
s - Medicine and Philosophy and Letters)
• He also studied painting and sculpture in Ac
ademy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.

"They Ask Me For Verse"
• In 1882 shortly after his arrival in Madrid, Riz
al joined the Circulo Hispano-Filipono (Hispa
no-Philippine Circle), a society of Spaniards
and Filipinos. He wrote a poem entitled "Me
Piden Versos" (They ask me for Verse).
Rizal as Lover of Books
• His collection books included The Bible, Heb
ew Grammar, Complete works of Volataire(9
volumes), Complete works of Horace (3 volu
mes) and etc.
• Rizal was deeply affected by Beecher Stowe'
s Uncle Tom's Cabin and Eugene Sue's The
Wandering Jew.
Rizal's First Visit to Paris (1883
)
• Rizal went to Paris, sojourning in this gay ca
pital of France from June 17 to August 20, 1
883.
• "Paris is the costliest capital in Europe"
Rizal as a Mason
• March 1883, he joined the masonic lodged called
Acacia in Madrid.
• His reason was to secure Freemnsonry's aid in hi
s fight against the friars in the Philippines
• Later he transferred to Lodge Solidaridad(Madrid
), he became Master Mason on November 15, 18
90.

• Science, Virtue and Labor which he delivred
in 1889 at Lodge Solidaridad.
Financial Worries
• The harvest rice and sugarcane failed on acc
ount of drought and locusts.
• The Dominican-owned hacienda increased t
he rentals of the lands cultivated by the Rizal
Family.
• June 24, 1884, A touching incident in Rizal's
life in Madrid occurs.
Rizal's Salute to Luna and Hida

onal Exposition of Fine Arts in Madrid

Rizal involved in Student Demo
nstration
• On November 20, 21, and 22, 1884, thre ser
ene city of Madrid exploded in bloody riots b
y the students of the Central University.
• Caused by the address of Dr. Miguel Morayt

• The appointment of the new Rector intensifie
d the fury of the student demo.
Studies Completed in Spain
• Rizal was conferred the degree of Licentiate
in Medicine by thr Universidad Central de Ma
drid on June 21, 1884.
• The next acdemic year (1884-85) he studird
and passed all subjects leading yo the degre
e of Doctor of Medicine.
• He recieved the award of "Sobresaliente"
