• The concept of international relations on some level is probably quite old,
given that humans have been establishing governments and communicating with each other for thousands of years. • The main reason why we should study IR is the fact that the entire population of the world is living in independent states. Together, those states form a global state system. • The purpose of the study of IR is to deepen knowledge and understanding of one of the most powerful forces operating on people, communities and corporations today. States are the most important actors in IR: international system is based on the sovereignty of about 200 independent territorial states of varying size – UNO

LIMITATIONS OF IR
• International Relations is not just a field of academic study, we all participate in
and contribute to International Relations on a daily basis. Every time we watch the news, vote in an election, buy or boycott goods from the supermarket, recycle our bottles, we are participating in International Relations. • IR has a significant impact on our lives. With improvements in communications and transport technology, we are constantly coming into contact with people, places, products, opportunities and ideas from other countries. The decisions we make in our daily lives have an effect, however small, on the world in which we live.
