For a change, in this activity, you will
not be given a lists of materials. Anything
that you can hear/touch is useful in this
activity.
III. Procedures:
1. Produce sound by using any material that
you can touch. Try not to duplicate each

2. How sound is produced in no. 1?
3. What happened to the materials as they produced sound?
OBJECTIVES:

1. Describe how sound waves are produced

2. Enumerate the properties of sound
3. Appreciate the importance of sounds in our
daily living
What is SOUND?
• Is a form of energy and is a longitudinal wave

• It is composed of waves of compression and

rarefaction in which the human ear is sensitive
Sound is considered as a
fingerprints of a person.
How do sounds differ?
How sound is produced?
Sound is produced
when a vibration
causes pressure
variations in the
medium.
Propagation of sound

Medium
-Material that sound
waves can travel
through.
-It can travel through
solids, liquids and
gases but not through a
vacuum.
B. HUMAN HEARING
sound wave

vibrates ear drum

amplified by
bones

converted to
nerve impulses in
cochlea

Properties of Sound Waves
A. Reflection of sound

Echo-
reflected sound
- it is what you
heard shortly after
the original
B. Reverberation
- The repeated sound
reflection
-Usually happens when
the walls of a room
are good sound
reflectors.
c. Refraction of sound
-change in direction,
as the wave moves
from one medium to
another
- It bends or refracts
as they move
through air.
Sound waves refract.
REFRACTION OF SOUND
D. Diffraction of Sound

- Sound waves bend or

diffract around
corners or barriers
like doors and walls.
