INTRODUCTION
• Ethics:
“Ethics can be defined as the rules or standards governing principles of right
conduct of the members of a particular profession". (American Heritage Dictionary,
2009).

• Preventive Ethics:
“Preventive ethics is commonly formulated in rules, and these rules are
usually stated in codes of ethics. The rules are often in the form of prohibitions,or
statements that probably should be understood
primarily as prohibitions”.

• Specifying it in engineering:
Preventive ethics is also called the negative face of engineering
ethics.
INTRODUCTION
• Preventive ethics is commonly formulated in rules, and these rules are
usually stated in codes of ethics.
• The rules are often in the form of prohibitions, or statements that
probably should be understood primarily as prohibitions.

• Many of the provisions are explicitly negative in that they

use terms such as ‘‘not’’ or ‘‘only.’’ They are stated in IEEE.

• Many provisions that are not stated in a negative form nevertheless

have an essentially negative force.

• ‘‘Avoid undisclosed conflicts of interest’’ is relatively easy to enforce, at

least in comparison to a rule that states ‘‘hold paramount the welfare of the public.’’

• Negative orientation can save us from what are often call ‘‘disaster cases,’’
TYPES OF MORALITY
Preventive Ethics covers 3 types of morality.
• Common Morality
Common morality is the set of moral beliefs shared by almost
everyone. To protect individuals from various types of violations of
their personhood by others.

• Personal Morality
Personal ethics or personal morality is the set of moral beliefs that a
person holds. We believe that murder, lying, cheating, and stealing
are wrong.

• Professional Ethics
It is a set of standards adopted by professionals insofar as they view
themselves acting as professionals. Every profession has its
professional ethics: medicine, law, architecture, pharmacy,
ETHICAL ISSUES
To what degree are engineers held accountable
when they do not consider preventive ethics?

•Obligation to the public, corporate policies and general engineering

practices in design and process all inform the decision making problems of
engineers.

•The public suffers to a great extent

• Social responsibility against legal liability often has a large role in discussing
risk and cost factors along with production time, and market demand.
ETHICAL ISSUES
Are there preventive ethical principles that can provide a
foundation for good practice?

•According to the NSPE Code of Ethics for Engineers the public health,
safety and welfare, professional competence, objectivity/truthfulness and
conflict of interest all play a part.

•The quality of engineers, who work along prevention, would define the code
of ethics that they would employ.

•The application of risk assessment and in-use monitoring to ensure public

health and safety, in a preventive manner.
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Be realistic in setting values and goals regarding everything, gear up
to prevent harm.

• Integrate ethical decision-making into the performance appraisal

process.

• Analyse problem, in a preventive manner, and have a

precautionary vision about everything.

• “Engineers shall issue public statements only in an objective and

truthful manner” (Code of Ethics of Engineers)
CONCLUSION
• Preventive Ethics plays a very important role in the functioning of our
society.

• Using the fundamental preventive ethics’ canons problems can be solved

successfully.

• Specifying preventive ethics in terms of engineering, the canons solve

ethical issues and the proper ethical practice in engineering would be
elevated with minimal unethical activities taking place.
