WHAT IS HEALTH CARE TOURISM?

People travelling across the globe

to prevail better medical
treatment, and also if possible, to
avail the hospitality offered along
with it.
OVERVIEW

• Low cost international travelling had taken the health industry

beyond its national boundaries.
• Health care tourism combines the advantages of medical
treatment and travelling to certain destinations.
REASONS FOR EMERGENCE OF HEALTH
CARE TOURISM
• Heavy reliance on out of pocket health expenditure.
• Overburdened public health care system.
• Non coverage of selected medical procedures.
• Large differences of prices for medical procedures among
countries.
• Increasing market size and the potential for the future.
COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR
INDIA
• Thailand – being the health tourism hub of India.
• Costa Rica
• South Africa
1.Should India emphasize more
on capabilities in complex
medical treatments or its
vacation aspect?
REASONS

• India has a large number of quality health care professionals.

(5lakh doctors and 7.37lakh nurses.)(20000-30000 docs and
nurses are added every year)
• The expertise of Indian doctors and growing credibility of
India is a result of high success rate in handling operations.
• Mortality rate is only 0.8% as compared to world avg of 1.2%.
• Infection rate is as low as 0.3% as compared to world
average of 1%.
• Bone marrow and renal transplant were also high (80%
and 90%).
• Should focus on vacation part and hospitality.
2.Should it aim at attracting
foreigners from nearby countries
or long haul visitors from America
and Newyork?
REASONS

• India being cheapest medical care centre should take

advantage and attract long haul visitors.
• Can be attracted by building better roads, buildings, airport
and hotels.
• Tie ups of hospitals with hotels and airports is an important
issue.
• Partnership with insurance companies to provide them better
security.
3.What improvements should the
country make to stimulate faster
growth of the local healthcare
tourism industry?
REASONS

• India should leverage its competitive advantage one of the

cheapest medical health care destinations in the world.
• India has too much of privatization in this sector which is
good. But there is a much greater scope of improvement if
India promotes its public health care service and works in
partnership.
• Provide best of western medical facilities along with great
Indian hospitality.
• By collaboration with facility providers.
• Should impose strong legislations to ensure the security in
terms of the legal rights of the patients travelling to India.
• Government should provide more subsidies and ease the
regulation of import duties.
