QUESTION 1
CONNOR MCKEEHAN
CONVENTIONS ON THE COVER

• Anchorage- I made use of anchorage on the cover by connecting the cover

photo to the text by typing “Matty B” very largely on the cover.
• Mode of address- The mode of address on my cover is the photo of Matty B
looking directly at the reader.
• House style- Our house style was the font we used called Adumu Regular.
• Headline- My headline on the cover was Matty B
• Strapline- The strapline is “The Miami Product that Made it Big.”
CONVENTIONS ON THE COVER

• Puffs- I had two puffs titled, “Kanyes New Album wasn’t worth the wait” and
“New Music From Cole??”
• Sweet Spot- My sweet spot was right under my cover to the right and in it I
placed our slogan.
CHALLENGING CONVENTIONS

• White text on black background- Magazines typically make use of black text on
a white background when writing articles and things in their magazines. Our
magazine wanted to challenge this common convention to make The Come Up
stand out. We instead created our articles and table of contents using white text
on a black background.
• Topic- The genre of our magazine is unique to ours and unlike any other hip hop
magazine. As far as we researched, we found no magazines that were solely
about up and coming hip hop artists. The only thing close was XXLs freshmen
edition that releases once a year. We challenged the topic of most hip hop
magazines and created our own unique genre.
Most magazines use black text on a
white background
USING TYPICAL CONVENTIONS

• Mode of address- Most of the hip hop magazines we researched had a mode of address
similar to mine. They almost always had a rapper on the cover looking at the reader. This
is what inspired my mode of address.
• Red font- The red font we used on the cover is very typical of hip hop magazines. Red is a
very exciting color so most hip hop magazines such ass XXL and The Source often use red
on their cover. The use of red in our magazine was based off of typical hip hop magazines.
• Cover photo- My cover photo mimics what a cover photo on most hip op magazines would
look like. I had my model make a very serious, intimidating face to make this happen. The
way in which I photographed my model was influenced by seeing other hip hop
magazine covers.
These magazines use a mode of address similar to mine as well as a lot of red on their
cover.
