Serial Number Formats For Peterborough Built Engines
Since 1945 Perkins Peterborough built engines used three main systems for numbering engines. In
summary the different systems are:
Pre-1966, System 1. 7 digit number e.g. 1234567.(some very early engines were simple 5 digit serial
numbers) Operated from 1945 until approx June 1966 and consisted of a seven digit number, that gave
no visible relation to the engine series concerned. All requests for System 1 parts and build list
information should be submitted to the Parts Help Desk
1966-1978, System 2. 13 digit alpha-numeric number e.g 152UAR13784DS, Records are available on
the Pre78 DVD or sectionalised microfiche, if no records can be located, requests for System 2 parts or
build lists should be submitted to the Parts Help Desk.
1978 onwards System 3. 15 digit alpha-numeric number e.g. TU31006U5514E. Parts information for
System 3 are available on SPI2. Please note there are exceptions where some system 3 builds have been
omitted from SPI2, in these instances please contact the Parts Help Desk.
Peterborough Serial Number Formats
Serial number additional information (what do all the numbers and letters mean?)
System 1 Seven Digit numeric fomat
In some instances a special second digit was used to identify engines supplied to major OEM
customers. e.g.
4.99 7012345 General range
7212345 Claas
7412345 Ford
System 2 This system operated from mid 1966 until the end of 1978 and comprised a mixture of alphas
and numerics to a maximum of thirteen digits. The information contained is as follows

Please Note. With this system it is essential that all alphas are correctly quoted to avoid confusion!
System 3 This is the current system introduced at the end of 1978. The engine number consists of up to
thirteen letters or numbers representing in sequence

Dorman Stafford Serial Number Formats
Dorman built engines have used the following format for numbering engines. In summary the
differences are:
06232/0185/014 = 6SE TCA2
082322/0191/011 = 8SE TCA2
123322/0490/004 = 12SE TCA2
163323/9608/026 = 16SE TCA2
Following several years under review, Perkins has taken a strategic decision to withdraw from
aftermarket parts support of the following Dorman engine ranges Beginning with the letters: ST, DA, Q,
J, L, LS, P, Y, Monair, F, DWD.

Perkins Stafford Serial Number Formats
Stafford built engines have used the following systems for numbering
engines. In summary the different systems are:
4000 Series.Prior to 1996 the 4000 series product was sold as Dorman “SE”. From March 1996
engines have a 3 letter prefixed Perkins serial number format. The change to 4 letter prefix was
1st Jan 2008
An example of comparable Dorman SE, 062323/0195/003 . The “23” denotes SE engine.
An example of 3 letter prefix, DGD062011U4805K
DGD = Engine type,06 = Number of Cylinders , U = built in UK , 4805 = Engine serial, K =
Year of manufacture
An example of 4 letter prefix, DGDF6002U100001U
On 4006 engines the “06” is replaced by the letter “F”,On 4008 the “08” is replaced by the
letter “H”, on 4012 the “12” is replaced by the letter “M” and on 4016 the “16” is replaced by
the letter “R”
Stafford 2000 Series. This engine has only ever had a 3 or 4 letter prefixed Perkins serial
number format, for example, JGB062011U1234M or JGBF3010U1234U
Dorman SE/ Perkins 4000 Series
Rolls Royce Shrewsbury Serial Numbers
The engine numbers on Rolls Royce built engines can be complicated….
Throughout their range of engines they had designated Models, Types and Series
Numbers for the C, CV and DV ranges. In addition to any one of the above
designations appearing on the engine plate is also a “build-line number”.
For the purpose of correctly identifying parts,it is the Build-line number that is
of importance.
Model number examples…M2467, M6053, M5196
Type number examples….SF65CN ,CV550C18 , CVM12212 , CVM8243
Series number examples…602000 , 650 , 101, 418 , 800600
In addition there were also automotive “Eagle” engines, eg E220 or 614000
DV Range examples would appear as D1 through to D8823, or D400 to D60015A
It should be noted that there is no current published parts information for these early
Engines. Please contact the Partshelpdesk for assistance.
It is of vital importance that the Build-line # plus any other numbers are
quoted.
Perkins Shrewsbury 2000 / 3000 Series serial
Numbers
Perkins built engines from 1984 had the following format…
For 2006 engines 8C27306U1234K
8C =engine type (2006),27306 =build list,U = UK built,1234 = serial # (could also
be 5 or 6 digits), K = Year letter (2003).
For 3008 and 3012 4B27819U1234K and 6A28342U1234K

4B =engine type (3008) (6A = 3012),27819 = build list, U = UK built,1234 = serial #
(could also be 5 or 6 digits), K = Year letter (2003).
It should be noted that a “S” prefix ( for Shrewsbury) may appear as the first
character.
From August 1994 the following format was introduced….see following slide…
Perkins Shrewsbury 2000 / 3000 Series Serial
Numbers
Perkins built engines from August 1994 had the following format…
For 2006 Engines SAF060027U1234C
S = Shrewsbury , A = engine type(automotive, G =Genset), F = rating,06 = number

of cylinders, U = UK build,1234 = serial#, C = Year letter
For 3008 and 3012 SGE080012U1234C and SGD120019U1234C

S = Shrewsbury, G = Genset, E = rating(TAG4),08 = number of cylinders,0012 =
build list, U=UK build,….etc
Where and how to look up serial number and build list
information For Peterborough Built Engines.
If your serial number looks like 1234567,these cannot be found on published information. Please
contact the Partshelpdesk.
If your serial number looks like 3.152U123456, please refer to the Pre 78 DVD. Verify the serial
number format is correct(refer to user guide on DVD) if the info cannot be found,please submit an
enquiry to the Partshelpdesk.
If your serial number looks like CE20304U123456, please refer to Spi2. If the Build list cannot be
found on Spi2,check with customer before submitting an enquiry to Partshelpdesk.

TIPPS. The Integrated Product Support Solution (TIPSS) is a combination of service tools and
applications designed to interact with a Perkins Engine. These tools and applications allow the user to
perform tasks such as, identifying replacement parts, fully service an engine, identify any engine faults
and view technical engine information.

engine model with this serial), so for example if your customer has U113337L
and does not know the build list, but does know that it’s a 1104C, the only

Grade letter/s can be found. Simply match the grade to the corresponding part
Number/s within Spi2.
(Note that it is quite common for an engine to be assembled from more than one grade
of Conrod) this is to compensate for manufacturing tolerances whilst ensuring the
engine remains emissions compliant)

SPI2 lists more than one con-rod for my engine which one do I choose?
Depending on the engine type there maybe a number of options available.
“New”1000 series are height graded, in which the correct grade can be determined by one of two methods.
If fitted with early “serrated face” type rods look for the paint colour code, then refer to Spi2 for the
corresponding part number. If no paint code is visible please refer to the workshop manual for details on rod
grade and measuring method. If fitted with fracture split rods, this rod has a 13 digit number stamped onto
the side, the 1st digit is the grade letter, simply match the grade letter to the corresponding part number.
4000 series are weight graded, please contact the Parts Help Desk with the full engine serial number who
will provide you with the correct part number to order.
1100 Series con-rods have a 13 digit number as per 1000 series fracture split rods, the 1 st digit represents
the grade required.Grade “R” = Red , Grade “G” = Orange , Grade “H” = White , Grade “J” = Green , Grade
“K” = Purple , Grade “L” = Blue.
On later engines the grade code corresponds with the colour, ie Grade “R” = Red , Grade “O” = Orange,
Grade “W” = White, Grade “G” = Green, Grade “P” = Purple, Grade “B” = Blue.
Rolls Royce “C” and “CV” Range and Perkins 2000 / 3000 Series are weight graded, please contact the
Parts Help Desk with the full engine serial number for assistance in identifying the correct grade and part
number.

“Old 1000” Series and 500 Series have height graded pistons.In the first instance, refer to the service manual for
Information. If in doubt contact the PartsHelp Desk for assistance

Top and Bottom joint kits are not listed in SPI2 for my engine.
The following engines have no joint kits, all joints and seals will have to be selected individually from SPI2
2200,2300,2500,2800 Series
Some 4000 series
Some 1100 Series
400 Series
Other engine build lists where joint kits are shown as TBA in SPI2, again are not available. To summarise, if
Top / Bottom Gasket kits are not visible within Spi2 for your engine build list, then they are not available.

Could you tell me the long/short engine for my 1300 series?
Long engines and short blocks were never introduced for this engine type, the service solution is to repair
using piece parts.Please refer to SPI2 via the build list for part numbers.

Can you identify an engine build list to use from a engine block casting number
It is impossible to identify a build list ( and subsequently any part numbers) from a block casting number.
In instances where the full engine serial number cannot be provided, contact the Parts Help Desk with any
individual part casting / bare piston numbers, bearing shell numbers etc so that we may be able to assist.

Can I order parts books on CD / DVD
We have no capability to produce CD / DVD parts books.
Parts Books are available as hard copy or in pdf format.
Pdf files which can be requested via the Parts Help Desk
Hard copy parts books can be ordered by contacting customer services, please advise the full engine serial
number as a number of lists will require a finishing list, these are mainly confined to older 1000 series, some
Rolls Royce Shrewsbury and a number of 100 Series

“In Spi2 there are two part numbers,which do I choose?”
When ever two or more part numbers are shown for the same item number without any serial number /cut in
or cut out information, you need to select the “latest condition” part number. The latest condition part
number is generally displayed above the older number. The older number can be identified by the “open
book & spyglass” icon.

What is the block part number for my 400 Series engine?
The cylinder block is not a serviced item on the 400 Series. The service solution is a certified Long Engine
(where available ), or a complete new engine for the 400C. Oversize pistons are available for the 400D only.

The Injection Pump on customers 1104C has a selective supersession,what is the part number?
The FIP fitted to the 1104C mechanical engine is adjusted / set on the production line dependant upon the
required rated engine speed, which varies according to build list.In the aftermarket the pump is supplied
ready to fit with no fuel adjustment necessary.For example, where the pump fitted is shown as 2644N209, in
the aftermarket this will be supplied as either 2644N209/22 , 2644N209/23 or 2644N209/24
To determine which part number is required,the engines rated speed will need to be known. The rated speed
can be found on PTMI.( refer to slides 52 –59).
