DISTILLATION OF

ALCOHOLIC
BEVERAGES
EXPERIMENT III
DISTILLATION
•process of heating liquid until it boils, then
condensing and collecting the resultant hot
vapors.
•It is a powerful tool for the identification and
purification of compounds
USES OF DISTILLATION
Boiling point determination
Boiling point is the temperature at which the vapor
pressure of the liquid phase of a compound is equal to
the external pressure acting on the surface of the liquid.
Boiling point, as determined by distillation, is well defined
and thus is one of the physical properties of a compound
by which it can be identified.
USES OF DISTILLATION
Compound purification
Distillation is useful in the following situations:
• The liquid is relatively pure to begin with
• The liquid has non volatile component
• Liquid is contaminated by a liquid with a boiling point
that differs by at least 70 degree Celsius
TYPES OF DISTILLATION
• Simple Distillation – used when
the boiling points of two liquids are
• Fractional Distillation – used
significantly different from each other. when the boiling points of liquids being
separated are close to each other7

• Vacuum Distillation – used

when the liquids being separated have
• Steam Distillation – used to
higher boiling points. separate heat-sensitive components.
TERMS
• Normal boiling point is the temperature at which liquid boils at 1 atmosphere of
pressure. It is more useful value when comparing different liquids. Altitude, pressure
and type of molecules significantly affects the value of boiling point

• Boiling chips are small, insoluble porous stones made of calcium carbide or silicon
carbide. It has cavities which provides space for air entrapment and bubble formation.
The formed bubbles ensure even boiling and prevents bumping and boiling over and
loss of solution
METHODOLOGY
• Simple distillation setup was assembled prior to the experiment.
• For the 1st alcohol beverage (gin),
100 mL is measured using graduated cylinder. This was then
transferred to the distillating flask and boiling chip was added. It
was heated until the 80 degrees Celsius, the boiling point of
ethanol. Temperature was retained until all the vapors/distillate
were collected.
• Same procedure was executed for brandy (empirador), except
only 50 mL was used.
