Main Purpose of this Presentation is to Develop
an understanding of parts and specifications of
Wärtsilä Engines. Wärtsilä produces a wide
range of medium-speed diesel, gas and dual-
and multi-fuel engines for marine propulsion,
electricity generation on board ships and for
land-based power stations.
What is 18-V-48??
Wärtsilä Engines are generally identified by
their Cylinder Bore in centimeters.
So Wärtsilä 18-V-48 means that
It is 18-Cylinder Wärtsilä Engine
Cylinder Bore equals to 48 cm
Cylinders are aligned in V-Shape.
Main Components:
Engine Block:
Made up of Nodular Cast Iron.
It has a stiff and durable design to absorb internal forces and enable
the engine to be resiliently mounted without any intermediate
foundations.
At the driving end there is a combined thrust bearing and radial
bearing for the camshaft drive and flywheel. The bearing housing of
the intermediate gear is integrated in the engine block.
The cooling water is distributed around the cylinder liners with water
distribution rings at the lower end of the cylinder collar.
Crank Shaft:
The crankshaft line is built up from three-pieces: crankshaft, gear and
end piece. The crankshaft itself is forged in one piece. Each crank
throw is individually fully balanced for safe bearing function.
Low bearing loads, robust design and a crank gear capable of high
cylinder pressures were set out to be the main design criteria for the
crankshaft.
The moderate bore to stroke ratio is a key element to achieve high
rigidity.
All crankshafts can be equipped with a torsional vibration damper at
the free end of the engine, if required by the application.
Connecting Rod:
The connecting rods are of three-piece design, which makes it
possible to pull a piston without opening the big end bearing.
The connecting rod of alloy steel is forged and has a fully machined
shank.
All connecting rod bolts are hydraulically tightened.
Oil is led to the gudgeon or Piston pin bearing and piston through a
bore in the connecting rod.
Piston:
The piston is of two-piece design with nodular cast iron skirt and
steel crown.
Wärtsilä patented skirt lubrication minimizes frictional losses and
ensure appropriate lubrication of both the piston skirt and piston
rings under all operating conditions.
Cylinder Head:
The cylinder head design is based on reliability and easy
maintenance.
A rigid box like design for even circumferential contact pressure
between the cylinder head and the cylinder liner.
Four-cylinder head fixing bolts are used, which simplifies
maintenance.
No valve cages are used; this improves reliability and provides
greater scope for optimization of the exhaust port flow
characteristics.
Piston Rings:
The piston ring set consists of two compression rings and one spring-
loaded conformable oil scraper ring.
All piston rings have a wear resistant coating.
Give low friction and high seizure resistance.
Both compression ring grooves are hardened for good wear resistance.
Cam Shaft & Valve Mechanism:
The camshaft is built of forged pieces with integrated cams,
one section per cylinder.
The camshaft sections are connected through separate
bearing journals, which makes it possible to remove single
camshaft sections sideways.
The bearing housings are integrated in the engine block
casting and thus completely closed.
Fuel Injection System:
The low-pressure fuel lines consist of drilled channels in cast parts
that are firmly clamped to the engine block.
The entire fuel system is enclosed in a fully covered compartment
for maximum safety. All leakages from injection valves, pumps and
pipes are collected in a closed system.
The injection nozzles are cooled by lubricating oil.
Fuels used in Wärtsilä 18V48 are High Viscosity HFOS, Crude Oils,
Emulsified Fuels, Liquid Biofuels.
Lubricating Oil System:
The engine is equipped with a dry oil sump.
In the standard configuration the engine is also equipped with an
engine driven lubricating oil pump, located in free end, and a
lubricating oil module located in the opposite end to the
turbocharger.
The lubricating oil module consists of an oil cooler with
temperature control valves and an automatic filter.
A centrifugal filter on the engine serves as an indication filter.
Water Cooling System:
The freshwater cooling system is divided into a high temperature
(HT) and a low temperature (LT) circuit.
The HT-water cools cylinder liners, cylinder heads and the first stage
of the charge air cooler.
The LT-water cools the second stage of the charge air cooler and
the lubricating oil.
In the most complete configuration the HT and LT cooling water
pumps are both engine driven, and the electrically actuated
temperature control valves are built on the engine.
Turbocharging:
Wärtsilä 48 is provided with Spex (Single pipe exhaust) system and
with high efficiency turbocharger.
The Spex system is practically free from interference. This means
very small deviations in the scavenging between the cylinders and
consequently an even exhaust gas temperature.
The turbocharger is equipped with plain bearings and there is no
cooling water.
The turbocharger is fitted with cleaning devices for both the
compressor and the turbine side.
The Wärtsilä 18-V-48 is a 4-stroke, turbocharged and intercooled
diesel engine with direct fuel injection (twin pump).
