Handling used hygiene products with bare hands exposes them to diseases like staphylococcus, hepatitis, e coli,
salmonella and typhoid.

But with times changing and both, for profit and non- profit organizations taking charge of the situation, things
seem to look better. An NGO from Pune, SWACH, started the Red Dot campaign this year, where people were
asked to wrap up their sanitary pads and diapers in paper that was marked with a red dot. This would help
workers identify sanitary waste and treat it accordingly.
