Naturalization is a strategy
• One of the strategies used in
translation , is naturalization.
• Translator must transfer the
message equivalently into Target
Language.
• Example:
SL: total TL: ‫ٹوٹل‬
Naturalization
• Naturalization
• According to Ghazzala(1995) it is the
attept to adopt the English terms to
the morphology of SL word structure
and can be seen as evaluation Of the
transcription method.
• Example: Technology
‫ٹیکنالوجی‬
Continue.....
• Ghazzala also said in 1995
that it is bettar than transcription .
• Thus it is not pure Arabic, the basic or
the root of terms remain in english
even if they are Naturalized.
Example:
SL : ‫المحمدیہ‬
TL: Muhammedism
Naturalization
• It is applied to get the most
appropriate translation result.
• Spelligs,terms and pronunciation
are transfered from SL to TL.
Example: SL: ‫طلسم‬
TL: /Telesm/
Target = Target
Importance
• Naturalization represents the cultural
specifiic concepts.
• It is used for interaction among the
people of :
• defferent cultures
• differet Socities
• differet Cuntaries
• differet Languages
• differet races etc.
Different Theories
• According to Newmark (1988: 82):
"This procedure succeeds as
transference and adapts the SL word first
to the normal pronunciation, then to the
normal morphology (word-forms) of the
TL”.
SL:Labortary
TL: ‫لیبارٹری‬
Theory of Eugene Nida
• According to Eugene Nida (1964) :This
concept (naturalization) was
introduced by Nida (1964) .
• He said that it is:
the closest natural equivalent to the
source language message.
Harram ‫=حرم‬spectum
Claim of Nida
• Nida claims that Naturalization can be
achieved by taking into account:
• 1) the SL and culture are understood
as a whole.
• 2) the cultural context of the message
• 3) the target audience.
Theory of Pembentunkan
• According to Pedoman Umum
Pembentukan Istilah (2005) ,three
ways in making new terms using
Naturalization . Adaptation with:
• Pronunciation +spelling adjustment.
Example. /ou/ if it is pronounced /u/
the spelling change into /u/
• Account /əkaʊnt / akun /akun/
Continue...
• 2. _ pronunciation +spelling
adjustment.Examples.
Business / bɪznɪs/,
America/əˈmerɪkə/
3. +pronunciation _ spelling
adjustment.Examples:
Program /prɒgram/ Program
/prɒgram/
Photo /fɒtɒ/ Foto /fɒtɒ/
Theory of Baker
• According to Baker (1987) transcription
and naturalization have not received
acceptance from the language purists
because they threaten the identity of
sourse language.
Arabic examples.
• Generator→ ‫مولد‬from ‫یولد‬to generate.
Ghazzala' favortism

Ghazzala (1995) is in favor of

using pure Arabic terms.
• For example,
the word “‫ ”تقنیة‬or in urdu "‫"تکنیک‬
can be used to render the
word “technology”.
Examples of Naturalization
SL : (english) TL:(urdu)
1. Deta ‫ڈیٹا‬
2. Computer ‫کمپیوٹر‬
3. Software ‫سافٹ وٸیر‬
4. Hardware ‫ہارڈوٸیر‬
5. Spir part ‫سپیٸر پارٹ‬
6. Technology ‫ٹیکنالوجی‬
Examples......
• SL: TL.
7.Laboratory ‫لیبارٹری‬
8.Refrigetor ‫ریفریجریٹر‬
9.Studio ‫سٹوڈیو‬
10. Factory ‫فیکٹری‬
11.celender ‫کیلنڈر‬
12.Total ‫ٹوٹل‬
Examples....

13.turbine ‫ٹرباٸن‬
14.Programm ‫پروگرام‬
15. Examples of urdu language.
" ‫"طلسم‬is translated into English as
/Telesm/.
16.Engine ‫انجن‬
Conclusion
• Naturalization is strategy which is also
used in foreignaizing strategy.
• It adapts the normal pronunciation and
morphology of TL.
• Naturalization is adaptation of the SL
word first to the normal pronunciation,
then to the normal morphology of the
TL. It is also called Direct transfer.
Conclusion
• A Natural translation must also be in
accordance with:
1. the context of the specific message,(
including grammatical and lexical
elements)
2. Detaile matters such as intonation
and sentence rhythm.
3. A translator should be sensitive to
the register and style of the SL.
