What is green building?

A green building is a building which is constructed by keeping in mind that the

building should be environment friendly. Green building is a one that uses more
natural daylight and uses natural resources for living like sunlight, air, etc and
generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for people is known as green
building. All buildings cannot be given the certificate of green building ,there are
some checklists which a building needs to fulfill to get that certificate and that is
given by IGBC in INDIA.
What is IGBC?

It is a council that was formed in 2001 whose vision is to “enable a sustainable built
environment for all and facilitate INDIA to be one of he global leaders in
sustainable built environment by 2050.”It provides services which include green
building rating programmes ,certification services and green building training
programmes. This council also organises an event called GREEN BUILDING
FLAGSHIP which is its annual flagship event on green buildings.

This council is a committee-based, member-driven. This committee have

architects, developers, product manufactures ,etc . The council also works with the
several state governments and central governments, WBC ,etc.
IGBC RATINGS SYSTEM

IGBC rates its building in three categories they are :

1. Silver rating
2. Diamond rating
3. Platinum rating

IGBC directly does not give certificates to buildings , instead they have a checklist
which is to be fulfilled by a building in order to get a green building certificate and
by paying some amount of annual fees the buildings are then certified
accordingly.
IGBC checklist

1. SITE – The first and most important is the location of the site and does the site
have proper landscape or not. The site has the proper parking or not.

2. WATER – Does the building have the facility to treat grey water system or not,
does the building have water harvesting or not,etc

3. ENERGY EFFICIENT – The most important point is that the building is energy
efficient or not. Does it have CFC refrigerants, does it have proper solar or
natural power system or not,etc

4. INDOOR AIR QUALITY – Now a days indoor ai quality inside the building also
matters, so to check that the IGBC checks whether the has tobacco smoke
controllers or not, does it have proper day- ighting system or not, it has proper
ventilation or not, etc.
IGBC registration

If any building fulfills the checklist and want the IGBC certificate then it need to get
registered with IGBC first. Registration is the initial step which helps establish
contact with IGBC and provides access to the required documents, templates,
important communications and other necessary information. Once the project is
registered, the project team can start preparing for documentation & calculations
to satisfy mandatory requirements and credit submittal requirements.
IGBC certification

The certification process goes on like this :

1. Register project with IGBC.

2. Incorporate the green requirements into the design and construction
documents.
3. Compile and submit documentation for pre-cetifiation.
4. Pre- certificate from the IGBC.
5. Status report very 6 months
6. Compile and submit ducuments for final crtification
7. Final certification.
