Polygonal Surface
It is a flat Surface which has five or more sides it may be
equal or not, but in this study we will only focus on
polygonal with equally sides length and also triangle and
square surfaces.

Turn-Milling Process
It is a combination of two machining Processes Turning
and Milling, where a rotating milling cutter replace the
conventional single point turning tool and it is given a
longitudinal feed motion along a rotating workpiece as
in turning.

Why Turn-Milling ?
• To produce difficult profiles without using a group of machine
tools.
• To machine Large and heavy workpieces.
• To minimize machining time.
• To remain the workpiece temperature relatively low.

• To get discontinuous type of chip formaion.

EXAMPLE
A press housing machined from alloy steel of weight of 30 tons, has
a machining time of 300 hours obtained by conventional machining
Dr.Al-Makky processes was reduced to 160 hours by turn-milling.
Classification Of Turn-Milling
Processes
 Depending on the Rotation Axis of the Cutter, Two Types of
Turn-Milling Processes can be differentiated as following:

Dr.Al-Makky
(a) Orthogonal turn-milling with tangential feed
(b) Orthogonal turn-milling with radial feed
(c) Orthogonal turn-milling with longitudinal feed.

Advantages Of Turn-Milling
Process
 Machining of High Strength Materials.
 Large Metal Removal Rate.
 Discontinuous chip formation.
 Reduce tool wear.
 Reduce machine vibration.
 Getting very accurate dimensions for
complicated profiles.

Dr.Al-Makky
Limitations of Turn-Milling
Process
 High Tool Costs.
 Higher Capital Investments Because of the
additional Cutter Drives.
 The Process is Economically Feasible for only
Large and Heavy workpieces and Difficult to cut
materials.
 Turn-milling in the eccentric position is only
applicable to workpieces which have neither
undercuts nor a sharp change of section.
