OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session the course participants
will be able to:
• Define continuous assessment.
• Conduct continuous assessment in the class.
ACTIVITY
LEARNING
• Dictionary definition: To gain knowledge,
comprehension, or mastery through experience
or study.
• Psychology definition: A relatively permanent
change in behavioral potentiality that is not due to
maturation or typical physical growth, but is due
to (reinforced) practice or experience.
ASSESSMENT

 Educational assessment is the systematic process of

documenting and using empirical data on the knowledge,
skill, attitudes, and beliefs to refine programs and improve
student learning.
INFORMAL ASSESSMENT
• Informal assessments are those spontaneous
forms of assessment that can easily be
incorporated in the day-to-day classroom
activities and that measure the students’
performance and progress. Informal assessments
are content and performance driven.
FORMAL ASSESSMENT
• Formal assessments are the systematic, data-
based tests that measure what and how well the
students have learned. Formal assessments
determine the students’ proficiency or mastery of
the content, and can be used for comparisons
against certain standards.
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
• Students should be able to answer
three basic questions:
• Where am I going?
• Where am I now?
• How can I close the gap?

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
• Summative: The administration of this test
may result in some judgement on the
learner, such as ‘pass’ or ‘fail’.
• The goal of summative assessment is to
evaluate student learning at the end of an
instructional unit by comparing it against
some standard or benchmark
• Examples
“When the cook tastes the soup, that’s
formative assessment;
when the customer tastes the soup,
that’s summative assessment.”

EXPLAIN / EXAMPLES
• Discuss and develop a list of all of the words that you
use connected to assessment. They many not
necessarily be the words listed in the book, but the
words that you and others use in relation to assessment.

LEARNING

• Learning is considered as a process for all-round

development of a child in all dimensions i.e.
Intellectual
Physical
Emotional, social, moral, ethical, etc.

• Learning is a continuous process

• Assessment must be an ongoing awareness of
students’ learning and needs rather than

• An occasional event in the program

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT
CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT
• Making observations and collecting information regularly to
find out what a student knows, understands and can do.
• Teachers observe the learners and make a judgment about
how well they are doing.
• Continuous assessment is ongoing and helps the teacher to
find out what the learners have learned.
• Some other terms are: classroom based assessment,
running records, etc.
