Intelligent Network (IN) Concept
• The intelligent network concept: intelligence is taken out of exchanges and placed
in computer nodes that are distributed throughout the network.

Intelligence => access to various databases

• This provides the network operator with the means to develop and control
services more efficiently.

• New capabilities can be rapidly introduced into the network. Once introduced,
services are easily customized to meet individual customer's needs.

• IN is Basically developed for fixed and Mobile telephone Networks

Intelligent Network (IN) Concept
• The Intelligent Network (IN) is an architecture that redistributes a portion of
the call processing, that is traditionally performed by telephony switches (SSP), to
other network nodes.

• E.g. of a Simple IN service: a SSP communicating with a Service Control Point

(SCP) to retrieve information about processing a phone call demonstrates an IN.

Intelligent Network (IN) Concept
• It is a standard network architecture specified in the ITU

• It is intended for fixed as well as a mobile telecom networks

• It allows to differentiate standard telecom services and value added services

 i.e. separation of logic controlling services from the basic call control
functions in existing telephone exchange.

• Note: intelligence is provided by network node on the services layer, distinct

from the switching layer of the core network

IN Services
• Tele voting
• Call screening telephone number portability
• Toll free call
• Prepaid calling
• Account card calling
• Virtual PBX
• Mass calling service
• Reverse charging
• Call distribution based on various criteria
• Time-based routing

Benefits of IN
• Therefore ,intelligent network (IN) offers added value(the ability to improve
services and develop new services):
Open standards, vendor independence.

Create open interface.

Rapid service creation and deployment.

Customized services to users.

Centralized service management.

New opportunities to make business i.e. new service, markets and customers.

Rapid adaptation to market needs andNoah

Architecture of IN

Network Elements in IN
• SSP-service switching point-provides a set of functions that are required for
interaction with the CCS and SCP.

• SCP-service control point-the SCP executes service logic and commands the SSP
to perform call related actions.

• Intelligent services need the assistances of peripheral devices known as intelligent

peripheral (IP).

• IP act as an interpreter between SCP and the user, enabling the service logic to
communicate with service user.

Network Elements in IN
• Then SCP instructs an IP to conduct a dialogue with user & return the
required information to SCP.
IP has automatic voice guidance facility

Multiple frequency tones to request the users

• SSP- signaling switching point-for switching used as their name indicates or

local exchange to subscriber or interface to tele phone network or
convert voice signaling in to SS7 signaling link.

Network Elements in IN
• STP-signaling transfer point-it is basically a network node-it works like
router (to perform routing of message between different signaling point).

• SCP-signaling control point-interface with databases-it will handle database

queries or subscriber information.

• Signaling link types-A-acess link, B-bridge link, C-cross link, D-diagonal link,
E-extended link, F-fully associated, etc.

• CCS-call control service-provides call processing functions.

15/08/2011 Noah F 12
Advantage
• Cost-effectiveness.

• High incoming call volume.

• Unlimited business development opportunities.

• Problem free billing.

• Efficient operator service.

15/08/2011 Noah F 13
Disadvantage
• The non-IN telecom network is the ultimate distributed system and it has served
operators well.

• There is no single point of failure, so its number one functional priority to remain
constantly available has historically been met reliably.
